Alvernia Moves Into Three-Way Tie With 67-60 Win At Arcadia

Glenside, Pa. (Jan. 12, 2011) - Alvernia University (8-5, 3-1) scored the first four points of the game and never trailed in a 67-60 win over Arcadia University (4-9, 0-3) Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Conference women's basketball action at Arcadia.

The Knights cut the gap to three points in the game's final seconds, but Angela Altemose (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) and Julie Hahn (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South), who both finished with a game-high 14 points, hit two free throws each for the final margin.  Allie Toczylowski (Mantua, N.J./Clearview Regional) also reached double figures with 11 and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.

Alvernia led by as many as 13 points in the first half and settled for a 10-point lead at the break, 35-25.

Arcadia scored five straight points with under four minutes left to pull within three points, but Toczylowski answered with a bucket.  Arcadia came back with two free throws, but again Toczylwoski had the answer.  This time she put back her own miss to push the lead back to five.

The lead hit six points iwth 34 seconds to go, but Arcadia knocked down a 3 with 10 seconds to go to cut that in half.  Altemose then hit a pair of free throws after being fouled on the inbounds, and Hahn hit two more for the final.  Alvernia went 23-for-33 from the line on the night.

The Crusaders had a decided rebound advantage, 46-34 including 15 offensive boards that led to 24 points.  Arcadia had three players reach double figures led by 13 from Corrine Geiger.

Alvernia enters a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings with Messiah and Widener, which lost at Albright Wednesday.

Alvernia and Messiah will face off Saturday afternoon in Reading.
