Radnor, Pa. (Jan. 5, 2011) - Senior center Angela Altemose (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) matched a career high with 17 rebounds and Alvernia University (5-5) overcame poor shooting and a 10-point, first-half deficit in a 48-45 win over Cabrini College (3-8) Wednesday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action at the Dixon Center.

The Cavaliers were looking for a two-game sweep of two Reading rivals after a 50-48 win over Albright College on Monday in a game played at Madison Square Gardens, but Altemose stepped up to help the Crusaders improve to 17-8 in the series against the Cavs with a game-high 19 points to go with the 17 boards.

Alvernia overcame its poorest shooting effort of the season hitting on less than 28 percent of its shots, but Cabrini managed just two percentage points better.  It was the lowest scoring output for the Crusaders this season, but the sixth time the Cavs have been held under 50 points.

After a quick four points from Alvernia to start the game, Cabrini ran off 19 of the next 24 to take a 19-9 lead with nine minutes left in the first half.  The lead was still nine for the Cavs with five minutes left in the half, but Altemose scored eight of 10 for the Crusaders who finished with a 10-2 run to hit the break down one, 24-23.

Alvernia put together an 8-0 run early in the second half to take an eight-point lead and held the lead the rest of the way.  Cabrini was able to cut the gap to one point on two occasions in the final three minutes, but freshman Brittany Young (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) responded to the first one with a layup and Altemose hit a pair of free throws that established the final margin.

Cabrini had a pair of players reach double figures with 10 points, Laura Caron and Colleen Stewart.

The Crusaders return home and get back into the conference schedule Saturday afternoon against Elizabethtown College in a women's and men's doubleheader at 1:00 and 3:00.
