Reading, Pa. (May 14, 2011) - Second-seeded Alvernia University (23-12) used two big innings to better #5 Wilson College (23-13) by a final of 10-2 in five innings in the first elimination game of the ECAC South Region Softball Championships Saturday afternoon at Angelica Park.
Wilson opened the game with two runs in the top of the first on a walk, two hits, and an Alvernia error. The Crusaders erased that lead in the third plating four runs highlighted by
Samantha Penk's (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) two-run triple.
The host Crusaders ended the game with six runs in the fifth.
Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) had a two-run single in the midst of the scoring and
Alicia Buchman (Alburtis, Pa./Emmaus) knocked in the game-ending run with a single up the middle.
Jennifer Petrilla (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton East) threw five innings giving up two runs on four hits and
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored.
Alvernia returns Sunday morning at 10:00 to face #8 Misericordia in another elimination game. The winner faces #3 DeSales in the Championship Final Sunday afternoon.
