Reading, Pa. (Oct. 6, 2012) - Lebanon Valley College (9-2-1, 2-1) scored on a rebound after a penalty kick for the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Alvernia University (6-4-3, 1-2) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference men's soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.

The two teams faced off in a rematch of last year's Commonwealth semifinal game which the Crusaders won 2-1 in overtime.

Alvernia was whistled for a foul in the box just three minutes into the game and LVC freshman Cam Alexander stepped up to take the kick.  Alvernia senior Ben Diller (Etters, Pa./Red Land) made a brilliant save on Alexander's initial attempt, but the striker was able to beat Diller to the rebound and poked in his team-leading eight goal of the season.

Diller made his second and final save of the day in the ninth minute and from there while the defense kept LVC from another threatening possession the offense went to work looking for the equalizer.  The only attempt the Crusaders were able to muster in the remainder of the opening half was a shot from Joe Gingrich (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) in the 30th minute that James Clements was able to save.

Alvernia cranked up the pressure early in the second half generating three corner kicks in the first 10 minutes, but none of them resulted in a shot on goal.

Tyler Reinoehl (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) missed high in the 58th minute and Travis Foster (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) had one saved a minute later.  In the 63rd minute Emir Guerrero (Fort Lee, N.J./Fort Lee) took a rip from 25 yards out that was off the mark looking for the upper right corner.

The Crusaders were able to muster four more corner opportunities the rest of the way, but couldn't turn one into a goal.  Kyle Martyn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) had one final effort in the 87th minute that was wide of the mark.

Alvernia will turn its attention to Elizabethtown on Wednesday.
