Altemose Reaches 1,000 As Crusaders Cruise Past Albright

Senior Center Scores 20 Becoming 12th Player To 1,000

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Feb. 8, 2012) – Two years ago Alvernia University (11-11, 4-7) opened with the first 17 points of the game at Albright College (5-17, 1-10).  Wednesday evening it came within a free throw of matching that number jumping out to a 16-0 lead en route to a 83-47 victory over Albright in Commonwealth Conference women's basketball action at the Bollman Center.

The Crusaders got six points from freshman Kate Yoh (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) during the run and a pair of buckets from senior Angela Altemose (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) who scored a game-high 20 and went over 1,000 career points on a free throw in the second half.

“We executed really well tonight,” said Alvernia head coach Kevin Calabria.  “Especially in the first half.  It's kinda fun to watch us play when we do that.”

The opening run didn't leave the final outcome in question; it was just a matter of if and when Altemose would reach one of the sports' most sought after milestones.

Altmose scored 14 by the break and went to 999 for her career on back-to-back free throws three minutes into the second half.  She finished the game 10-for-10 from the line--the first time in her career she's been perfect in as many attempts—and hit 1,000 on her next free throw with 13:29 left in the game.

Calabria called timeout after the make and the home announcer indicated the milestone.  After the short break Altemose returned to the line and knocked down another.  Coincidentally, she scored her 1,000th in high school in similar fashion from the free throw line on the road.

She becomes the 12th women's player in school history to reach 1,000 and joins teammates and classmates Allie Toczylowski (Mantua, N.J./Clearview Regional) and Kelli McIntyre (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) in quadruple digits.

Toczylowski did her best to steal the headline from Altemose finishing with 15 points and a season-high 16 rebounds and Chelsea Gieringer (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) scored 10 off the bench.  Albright was led by Jenny Knoebel who posted a dozen.

With the win the Crusaders keep their playoff hopes alive.

“We're still alive,” said Calabria.  “Let's win them out.  Let's do it and see what happens at the end.  If we get in the playoffs then anything can happen.

The Crusaders need to sweep the final three games of the season--at home against Elizabethtown and Messiah then on the road at Lycoming--and need Etown to then drop its final two against Lycoming and Messiah.

Alvernia improves to 18-3 all time against Albright and returns to .500 for the season.
