Owings Mill, Md. (Nov. 26, 2013) - Kayla Kelly scored a game-high 28 points on 13-of-18 shooting to lead Stevenson University (1-3, 1-0) to a 66-61 win over Alvernia University (4-1, 0-1) Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Conference women's basketball action at Owings Mill Gymnasium.
Stevenson opened up a 7-2 lead through the first two and a half minutes and never trailed after that. Alvernia put together an 11-0 run midway through the second half to tie the score at 52-all, but could never surge ahead. Junior guard
Kaitlyn Yoh (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) scored four of her game-high 15 points during the run and freshman
Tyra Roberts (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) also scored four during the stretch.
Kelly stopped the run with a bucket and Stephanie Martinez added a 3-point play to push the Mustangs' lead back to five points.
Alvernia senior
Brittany Young (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) scored on a putback layup with 92 seconds to go that pulled the Crusaders back within four, but missed twice and had a pair of turnovers over the next minute-plus with a chance to cut it to a one-possession game.
Roberts collected her first career double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.Â
Chelsea Ebersole (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) and
Logan Focht (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) both scored 12. Kelly was the only player in double figures for the Mustangs.
Alvernia returns home to host Lycoming College next Wednesday.
