Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) tossed a two-hit shutout in game one, and
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) followed with a one-hit shutout of her own in the second game as Alvernia (17-3) swept Delaware Valley College (5-7) this afternoon by scores of 20-0 and 11-0. Both games ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Alvernia scored at least one run in all ten innings today and belted 30 hits on the day, 13 for extra bases.
Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South),
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech) and
Briana Coan (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) all added a homerun.
In the opener, Alvernia went ahead 4-0 after the first inning with RBI-singles from
Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) and Coan. They added one in the second with an RBI-single from
Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and three more in the third with a sacrifice fly from Penk and a two-RBI triple off the fence from Galanti. Six in the fourth, and six more in the fifth secured the 20-0, five-inning victory. The fourth was highlighted by a two-out, two-RBI double from Kitchen and the fifth saw Galanti connect for a two-run homerun.
Galanti led Alvernia at the plate in game one as she went 4-for-5 with a triple, home run, four runs scored and five RBIs. Penk scored three times and drove in four on a 2-for-4 effort while Kitchen was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs. On the mound, Wolfe allowed just one hit through five innings while striking out seven to earn her seventh win of the season.
In game two, Alvernia went up 3-0 in the first inning thanks to doubles from Galanti and
Rachel Fritz (Kenhorst, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and an RBI-single from Kitchen. They added two more in the second thanks to a two-run dinger from Penk and one more in the third for the 6-0 lead. Four runs on four hits in the fourth put Alvernia up 10-0, and a solo homerun from Coan gave them Alvernia the 11-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning.
Kitchen remained hot in game two as she went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and three RBIs. Penk was 2-for-4, including her fourth home run of the year. She scored three times and knocked in two. Coan added her third round-tripper of the year while
Rachel Fritz went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Dungee went five full innings, taking a perfect game into the top of the fifth and struck out seven to improve to 10-0 on the season.
The Crusaders travel to Ursinus College on Thursday April 4th for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00pm.
