Etown Uses Second-Half Run To Better Crusaders, 70-59

Yoh Eclipses 25 In Second Straight Game For Alvernia

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 18, 2014) – Elizabethtown College (12-2, 6-2) used a 12-4 run early in the second half to build a 16-point lead then cruised to a 79-50 win over Alvernia University (5-10, 1-7) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference women's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.

Senior Taylor Alwine scored six of her 10 points for the Jays during the run.  Etown put three players in double figures.  Kendra Beittel led the way with 21 and Taylor Kreider scored 17.  Alvernia junior Kaitlyn Yoh (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) led all scorers with 26 points—the second straight game over 25 points for Yoh after breaker her previous career best of 19 points with 31 against Widener on Wednesday.

Neither team held a first-half lead larger than four points until Etown broke a 17-all tie with seven straight points for a 24-17 lead with 8:41 left in the half.  Rachel Forjan started it with a bucket, Kendra Beittel hit a 3, and Taylor Kreider scored in the paint to cap it.

Alvernia answered with three free throws from Yoh over the next two minutes, but Kreider and Beittel then scored back-to-back for an 8-point Etown lead.

A 3-point play from Yoh pulled Alvernia within five points, but the Crusaders managed just one bucket—from Alisa Greco—over the final 4:43 of the half while the Jays scored eight points—including a layup from Emily Young right in front of the horn—for a 38-27 lead at halftime.

Alvernia had the deficit down to seven points after the first three minutes of the second half, but got no closer.

Yoh hit 8-of-16 shots from the floor and went 10-for-13 from the free throw line.  She also led the team with seven rebounds and handed out three assists.  Greco was the only other player to reach double figures with 10 points.

The Crusaders travel to Arcadia for a conference game on Wednesday.
