First Half Run Carries Dickinson Past Alvernia, 92-70

Yoh And Roberts Lead Crusaders With 12 Apiece

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 6, 2014) – Dickinson College (3-7) sophomore Jennifer Smith scored a career-high 29 points leading the Red Devils to a 92-70 win over Alvernia University (4-7) Monday evening in non-conference women's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.

The Red Devils opened the game on an 8-0 run while the Crusaders went 0-for-4 from the floor over the first four-plus minutes.  Freshman Jenna Wolff (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) put the Crusaders on the board with a pair of free throws and Dickinson answered with a run of six straight to push the lead to 13 points, 15-2.

The lead hit 14 points, 23-9, with 9:03 left in the opening half before the Crusaders put together their first run of the night with Kaitlyn Yoh (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) scoring the first four points of a 6-0 run to cut the gap to eight.

The gap was eight points again two minutes later after another jumper from Yoh when Dickinson put together a string of 10 straight for a 37-19 lead with 3:25 left in the half.

The Devils hit a bit of a cold streak missing each of their last four shots from the floor while the Crusaders closed the half with six straight points to hit the break trailing by 12, 37-25.

The Crusaders made an inspired run with tenacious, trapping defense early in the second half, but could only trim three points off the lead with 14:32 left to play.

The Red Devils had an answer for every run the Crusaders put together.  The teams traded buckets after Alvernia cut it to single digits.  Smith hit a jumper to put the Devils back up 11 points, 55-44 with 13:03 to go then answered a Tyra Roberts (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) bucket with another layup that started a streak of six straight for a 15-point lead, 61-46 with 10:53 left.

Alvernia had one last push to cut the gap back to 10 points on a 3-point play from Stevie Fortna (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon Catholic), but Dickinson answered that with 10 straight to salt the game away.

Yoh and Roberts led the way for the Crusaders with 12 points apiece.  Dickinson had five players in double digits.

Alvernia returns to the conference schedule Wednesday when it hosts Hood College for a women's and men's doubleheader.
