Tyra Roberts scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Alvernia University (0-1) opened the season with a 56-55 loss to Mt. St. Vincent (1-0) on the opening day of the McDaniel College Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon.
Mt. St. Vincent had a game-high double-double with 22 points and 17 rebounds.
Alvernia shot just 22 percent in the first half and trailed by eight, 31-23.
The Crusaders opened the second half with a 15-6 run to take a 38-37 lead with 12:48 left to play. The game remained a one-possession game until Mt. St. Vincent ran off six straight points for a 48-42 lead with 6:16 to play.
The lead was eight points with 2:38 to play until Roberts hit a short jumper that started an 8-0 spanning just over two minutes that tied the score at 54-all with 20 seconds left.
Mt. St. Vincent hit two free throws to break the tie with nine seconds left and Roberts was fouled with a second to go. She hit the first free throw and MSV took a timeout. Roberts missed the second free throw--the 16th miss on the night for the Crusaders--and MSV needed just one in-bound to end the game.
Alvernia will face Penn State-Harrisburg in Sunday's consolation game.
