BOX SCORE Chester, Pa. (Feb. 15, 2014) - Alvernia University (8-15, 4-12) was held to 36 percent shooting including just 3-of-24 from the 3-point line in an 85-51 loss to Widener University (13-10, 8-8) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference women's basketball action at Widener.
Juniors
Kaitlyn Yoh (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and
Mya Lobb (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) scored 15 and 12 respectively and combined to shoot 9-for-13 from the floor. The rest of the team made nine shots on 37 attempts.
Widener opened up a 16-6 lead scoring three straight buckets to cap the run with 14:02 still left in the first half. Alvernia turned in a great response getting seven straight points from the combination of Lobb and Yoh with Yoh finishing up a 3-point play to pull the Crusaders within three points at 16-13.
The Crusaders then went cold missing four straight shots plus a free throw while the Pride scored 10 points for a 26-13 lead with 5:31 left in the half.
The lead hit 17 points with 1:30 left in the half, but the Crusaders put together one more run with
Logan Focht (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) hitting a 3 near the buzzer to finish off an 8-2 run that had Widener up 37-26 at the break.
Widener scored the first five points of the second half and pushed the lead up to 36 points, 71-35 midway through the second half.
Widener avenged an earlier-season loss to the Crusaders and kept itself in playoff contention at 8-8 and tied for the fifth and final postseason spot. Alvernia continues the season next Tuesday at Hood College.
