BOX SCORE Frederick, Md. (Feb. 18, 2014) - Hood College (6-18, 3-14) banked in a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in regulation to force overtime then banked in another at the buzzer for a 66-33 win over Alvernia University (8-16, 4-13) Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Conference women's basketball action at BB&T Arena.
Allie Appleby worked off a high screen in the final seconds of regulation and let fly from the left elbow with a 3 that banked in right off the box. Alvernia turned the ball over on with three seconds on the clock and Hood's heave from midcourt was off the mark.
Neither team shot the ball particularly well in overtime with Hood going up 63-60 on three free throws over the first two minutes. Alvernia missed each of its first four shots in the extra frame, but was still within one score thanks to an 0-for-4 effort from the floor for the Blazers and just a 3-for-8 clip from the free throw line for the hosts.
Alvernia sophomore
Chelsea Ebersole (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) knocked down a 3 with 28 seconds left to tie the score setting the stage for Appleby who once again went glass from beyond the arc for the game-winner.
Alvernia put three players in double figures led by
Tyra Roberts (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) who finished with a game-high 16 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.Â
Kaitlyn Yoh (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) finished with 15 points and
Alisa Greco (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) had 10.
Hood held the lead for the entire first half, leading by as many as 13 points, 30-17 with 4:03 left in the half. Alvernia was able to knock nine points off that lead to pull within four, but in a sign of things to come, Hood got a 3 on its final possession of the half for a 33-26 lead at the break.
The Crusaders fell behind by eight early in the second and had the lead down to one points, 34-33 on a jumper by Yoh with 17:57 to go. Both teams came up empty over the next four minutes until
Ann Walker (Warwick, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) hit a pull-up jumper at the elbow to give Alvernia its first lead of the game.
The lead remained one possession either way until
Lindsey D'Agostino (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) hit a 3 with 9:56 to go that put the Crusaders up five. Alvernia still led by five three minutes later before Hood put together a run of five straight to tie the game at 51-all.
Alvernia was up four points, 58-54 following two Yoh free throws with 58 seconds left, but gave up a 3-point play that saw the lead cut to one. Yoh hit two more free throws for the 60-57 lead before Appleby's game-tying 3.
The Crusaders return home to host Messiah College in the last game of the season on Saturday.
