Crusaders Eliminate Messiah With 6-5 Win

Wolfe Goes The Distance

Reading, Pa. (May 3, 2014) – Fourth-seeded Alvernia University (21-13) got a complete game from Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) in a 6-5 win over top-seeded Messiah College (28-9) Saturday afternoon in the losers bracket final of the Commonwealth Conference Softball Championships at Angelica Park.
 
Alvernia advances to face #2 Lebanon Valley in the championship round on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
 
The Crusaders opened the game with three runs in the top of the first.  Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, N.J./Marine Academy of Sci/Tech) opened with game with a walk and was still at first after back-to-back strikeouts.  Amanda Turner (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) and Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) followed with singles to push home a run and Shannon Grim (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) reached on an error that allowed two more to score.
 
Messiah opened the bottom of the first with a triple and scored one run then pushed across another run in the third on a fielders choice.
 
Alvernia got an insurance run in the fifth then added two more in the top of the seventh.
 
Messiah drew a walk to start the bottom of the seventh and after a pop out to second ripped a pair of singles to cut the gap to 6-3.  Wolfe got another pop out then surrendered a two-run double that pulled the Falcons to within a run at 6-5 and moved the potential tying run to second.  Wolfe then ended the game on a fly ball to center.
