BOX SCORE Fredericksburg, Va. (Nov. 19, 2016) - Alvernia University (0-2) was held to 36 percent shooting, including 5-of-22 from behind the arc, in a 94-45 loss to No. 20/22 Mary Washington University (2-0) Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action at the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament, hosted by Mary Washington.
Freshman
Torie Zerbe led the Crusaders with 11 points, while teammates
Maya Cooper and
Marissa Armolt added 10 apiece.
The two sides exchanged buckets through the first three minutes before the Eagles posted a 10-point run for a 15-5 advantage. Back-to-back jumpers by
Miranda Hoover and Cooper brought the Crusaders within 6, but Mary Washington limited Alvernia to just two shots through the next four minutes to claim a 29-9 lead with eight minutes remaining until the half.
The Crusaders responded with solid defense of their own, holding the Eagles to a pair of shots through the next two minutes. Strong shooting from the line helped both teams swap scores through the remainder of the quarter, giving the Eagles the 46-22 margin at the half.
The Crusaders then went cold, netting just eight points across the third quarter while shooting 3-for-8 from the field. Mary Washington countered Alvernia, posting its best quarter of the night with 28 points to take a 74-30 lead into the final quarter.
Alvernia found some of its rhythm again in the final 10 minutes, being outscored by just five at 20-15. Zerbe jumpstarted the quarter for the Crusaders, making a layup and draining a 3 to open the scoring. Armolt closed out the quarter shooting 3-for-4 from the line.
The Eagles were led by junior Kendall Parker, who recorded 30 points.
Mary Washington advances to face Virginia Wesleyan in the Championship game on day two of the Hyatt Place Tournament. The Crusaders will face Averett in the consolation game first, with tip-off set for 12:00 nooon.
