Lillian Hussar took a decisive third set at No. 3 singles to seal #2 seeded Alvernia University's 5-2 win over #3 Hood College in MAC Commonwealth Women's Tennis Semifinal action Tuesday afternoon at Angelica Park.
With the win, the Crusaders advance to the final round of the MAC Commonwealth tournament.
Facing a 2-1 deficit after doubles action, the Crusaders took their first four singles matchups to lock up the win.
Cassandra Noray and
Amanda Phillips paired for Alvernia's solo double's win, taking the hard fought matchup 8-6.
Phillips gave the Crusaders their second point of the day, wrapping up No.2 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 straight set win.
Emily Thek tacked on the third point, notching a straight set win at No.4 singles with a pair of 6-2 sets.
Cassandra Noray followed Thek, putting Alvernia ahead 4-2 with her No.1 singles victory. Noray easily took the first set 6-1, and outlasted Hood's Olivia Hosch in the second set, pushing past with a 7-6 win.
Hussar then locked things up, claiming Alvernia's fifth and final point of the day. After falling 6-7 in the first set, Hussar bounced back to take the second set 6-4, and power past Hood's Aubrey Fetters 6-1 in the third set.
With Hussar's win, the No.5 and No.6 matchups of
Xena Sperrazza and
Cassandra Bean were halted.
Alvernia advances to the MAC Commonwealth final for the second year in a row. The Crusaders will take on #1 seed Messiah College Saturday at Messiah.
