BOX SCORE Collegeville, Pa. - Alvernia University (0-1) was held to 10 points or less each quarter on its way to an 80-28 loss to Ursinus College (1-0) in the 2018-19 season opener on Saturday evening at Ursinus.
The Bears went on a 16-0 run to open the game before
Torie Zerbe made a layup with 3:35 left in the first quarter to put Alvernia on the board. The Bears then outscored the Golden Wolves 10-5 to close out the quarter with a 26-7 lead.
Alvernia opened the scoring in the second quarter with a jumper from
Gabriella DeVito, but the Bears held the Golden Wolves to just seven more points while scoring 20 of their own to close out the half with 46-16 lead.
The Golden Wolves again scored the opening points of the third quarter - a jumper from
Abbie Zerbe - but another cold streak gave the Bears the opportunity to extend the lead to 68-26 after 30 minutes.
The Bears put the finishing touches on the game with a 12 point fourth quarter while holding Alvernia to just two points - a layup from
Julia Ewen - in the final ten minutes to take the 80-28 win.
Alvernia's offensive efforts were led by
Maya Cooper, who finished the night with six points and two assists.
Abbie Zerbe posted five points and two rebounds off the bench, and Ewen had five points and five rebounds.
Torie Zerbe led the rebounding efforts with seven rebounds, six of which were defensive collections.
Ursinus was led by freshman Gabby Downs who posted 31 points in her collegiate debut.
Alvernia looks to get back on track on Wednesday in its home opener against Penn State Berks at 7:00 PM.
