Alvernia Drops A Pair Of Matches and JWU Tip-Off Tournament

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 Providence, RI (Jan. 25, 2019) - Alvernia University (0-2) opened its 2019 season with a 3-1 losses to both MIT (3-0) and Lasell College (1-1) on Friday evening  at the Johnson and Wales Tip-Off Tournament.

Alvernia opened its 2019 season a week later than planned after weather caused the cancelation of what was to be Alvernia opening tournament at Penn State Altoona.

In Alvernia's first match of the evening, Alvernia fell to MIT 3-1. In the first set of the match, the Golden Wolves fought off a set point, but the Engineers had a kill by Skylar Kaufman to end the set at 25-23. Alvernia evened things up with a 25-23 second set win. The Golden Wolves fought back after trailing 8-4 and traded leads with the Engineers for the majority of the set, but the Engineers began to pull away. The Engineers held a late 21-17 win, but the Golden Wolves went on a 8-2 run to close out the set and take the 25-23 win. MIT responded with an impressive 25-15 third set victory and the Engineers closed out the match with a 25-16 fourth set win.

Logan McGinley finished the match with a team-high nine kills and Spencer Matthews had a match-high 30 attacks. Mike Monczewski had a game-high 26 assists and added a service ace for the Golden Wolves.

In the second match of the night against Lasell College, Alvernia faced a 2-0 deficit after dropping the first two sets 25-23 and 25-20, respectively. The Golden Wolves battled back and took a demanding 25-19 third set victory to force a fourth set. The Golden Wolves and Lasers traded the lead for the entirety of the fourth set, but Lasell came out on top following two attack errors and a service error by Alvernia.

McGinley again led Alvernia with a team-high 13 kills in the second match. McGinley also led Alvernia with 33 attacks. Monczewski added 29 assists for Alvernia and Victor de Avila had four blocks on the match.

Alvernia finishes up its time at the JWU Tip-Off tournament tomorrow at 10:00 AM when the Golden Wolves take on the host Wildcats.
