Reading, Pa. (Nov. 2, 2019) - No. 12 Delaware Valley University (8-1, 7-0) scored 37 second half points in a 44-0 win over Alvernia University (2-6, 1-5) Saturday afternoon in Middle Atlantic Conference football action at Alvernia.
Delaware Valley scored the only touchdown of the first half with 10:40 left in the second quarter and fumbled twice into the endzone for touchbacks.
Del Val won the toss and elected to receive. The Aggies moved the ball down field to the Alvernia 11 and stalled with three straight incompletions. They committed an unsportsmanlike penalty after third down to move the ball back to the 26 and a long pass fell incomplete.
Alvernia linebacker
Tajon Whiten forced a fumble from Mario Nigro at the 1-yard line on the next Del Val possession and
Christian Sloan jumped on the ball in the endzone.
Midway through the second quarter, Alvernia quarterback
Darrius Sample was sacked at the 15 and fumbled the ball. The Aggies moved the ball down to the 5 and Anthony Fontana looked to be heading in on a keeper before the ball was punched out and fumbled through the endzone.
Neither team threatened the rest of the half and the Aggies took a 7-0 lead into the halftime break.
Alvernia mishandled the kickoff to start the second half and started its first drive at the 6-yard line. Two plays later Sample was tackled in the endzone for a safety.
Del Val started the next possession in Alvernia territory after a short kick and an offsides penalty against the Golden Wolves. The first play went for 30 yards from Fontana to Aaron Nelson and the Aggies punched it in on a 5-yard run from Fontana.
Alvernia moved the ball on the next possession but it ended with a pick on a long pass from Sample from near midfield.
The Wolves forced another fumble on the next drive and had their most threatening drive of the day moving the ball down to first and goal from the 3.
Samples and Malcom Carey were both tackled for a loss and an incompletion set up 4th and goal from the 5. Sample kept the ball but was tackled again for a loss and the Wolves turned the ball over on downs.
Delaware Valley scored on its next two possessions and added a defensive touchdown late in the fourth for the final margin.
Six different receivers caught a pass from Sample for the Wolves and Carey rushed for 41 yards to lead the home team.
Alvernia continues the season next Saturday at FDU-Florham.
