Hillbish Leads Alvernia At Danny Curran Invitational

Chester & Selinsgrove, Pa. (Mar. 29-30, 2019) - This past weekend on Friday & Saturday, the Alvernia University Men's & Women's Track & Field teams competed with a split squad performance at Susquehanna University & Widener University. The throwing athletes on the team competed at the Jim Taylor Invitational at Susquehanna while the rest of the team's athletes competed at the Danny Curran Invitational at Widener University.

Friday
Friday night was just the beginning of what would be a stellar weekend for the Golden Wolves. At Susquehanna University, Senior Gabriel Fernandez qualified for MAC's with a personal best throw of 32.37m (106'2 ft.) in the men's hammer throw. Teammate, Freshman Jason Scott would follow suit with another MAC qualifying mark and personal best throw of 34.40m (112'10 ft.) in the men's hammer throw.

Meanwhile, over at Widener University, Senior Matthew Junio would collect a MAC qualifying time of 34:44.95 in the Men's 10K. Freshman Paige McKenna competed in the Women's 5K where she ran a personal best time of 21:14.00.

Saturday
The Golden Wolves picked up right where they left off on Saturday morning. The throwers again traveled to Susquehanna University while the rest of the team returned back to Widener University.

At Susquehanna, Freshman Jason Scott wasn't quite finished with his great performance the night before and wanted to top that. He threw a mark of 37.29m (122'4 ft.) in the men's discus throw, as well as throwing 11.90m (39'0 ft.) in the men's shot put competition. Both marks were personal bests for Scott as well as MAC qualifying marks. Graduate Assistant Kristen Sipling would throw a personal best of 34.73m (113'11 ft.) in the women's hammer throw, and Freshman Dianna Morganti would throw a personal best of 25.64m (84'1 ft.) in the women's discus throw.

Sophomore Katelyn Schoener got things started at Widener University. In the women's 1500m, Schoener would run a 19-second career best time of 5:24.50. In the men's 1500m, Junior Tyler Barrett would attempt to match that with a 10-second career best time and MAC qualifying time of 4:09.92.

Freshman Adam Loehr picked up a personal best time in the men's 110m Hurdles, and was followed by freshman teammates, Trevor Keefer in the men's 100m dash, Ryan Long in the men's 800m, and Lauren Lopez in the women's 100m dash. Junior Tessa Beck ran a career best time in the women's 800m, and Junior Nicholas Fiucci ran a season best time in the men's 400m as well.

Senior Lauren Callueng picked up a pair of MAC qualifiers with a time of 1:03.52 in the women's 400m, and a jump of 10.01m (32'10 ft.) in women's triple jump. Sophomore Susanna Pirollo would have the highest finish on the day for the Golden Wolves in the women's 100m Hurdles. Pirollo finished 5th overall with a season best time of 16.41.

Freshman Ivan Fegely would gather a 6th place finish in the men's high jump with a mark of 1.90m (6'2 ¾ ft.). That mark was good enough for a personal best jump and MAC qualifier. Senior Anthony Hedgepeth picked up a pair of MAC qualifying marks in the men's long jump and men's triple jump. Hedgepeth jumped 6.48m (21'3 ft.) in long jump which was good enough for 6th overall, and then jumped 13.00m (42'7 ft.) for 10th place overall in triple jump. Junior Hunter Guenzel gathered a 7th place finish in the men's javelin with a mark of 53.49m (175'6 ft).

Senior Theresa Hillbish would add on to the phenomenal meet day by throwing a personal best mark and new school record of 33.56m (110'1 ft.) in the women's javelin throw. The former record was held by Hailey Lepori which was 33.21m (108'11 ft.) from an East Stroudsburg University meet back in April of 2012.

To end such a successful weekend for the Golden Wolves, the women's 4x400m relay of Liza Callueng, Susanna Pirollo, Katelyn Schoener, and Lauren Callueng would run a season best time of 4:18.52 for a 12th place finish to conclude the meet.

This weekend the Golden Wolves picked up sixteen personal best performances, thirteen MAC qualifying marks, six top-ten finishes, and a school record. The Golden Wolves Track & Field teams will be back in action on Saturday, April 6th when they travel to Millersville University for the Millersville Metrics Meet.
