Clermont, Fl. (Mar. 8, 2019) - Alvernia University (7-5) fell to Moravian College (6-3) 10-2 in five innings in its first game of the day and defeated University of Northwestern (4-2) 6-0 to close out is spring break stint in at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.
In the first game of the day, Moravian blew open the game with a seven-run fourth inning on its way to a 10-2 five inning win.
The Greyhounds got on the board first with a run in the top of the first.
The Golden Wolves tied it up in their half of the third with
Sarah Bystrycki driving in
Morgan Psiuk with an RBI single to center field.
The Greyhounds capitalized on Alvernia errors with a seven-run top of the fourth to take the 8-1 lead.
Moravian added two more with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth.
The Golden Wolves got one back in the bottom of the fifth with another RBI single from Bystrycki, which drove in
Sarah Reinert, but Alvernia would fall 10-2.
Bystrycki led Alvernia's offense with two hits and two RBIs. Psiuk and
JoAnnah Lim also finished with two hits.
Ally Decker went three and a third in the loss, with
Nicole August coming in in relief to finish it out.
In game two of the afternoon against UNW St. Paul, Alvernia had just one hit until
Emily Carmella opened the scoring with a solo homer to left field to give Alvernia the 1-0 advantage in the top of the fourth.
Alvernia added four in the top of the fifth on a two-out rally. Psiuk got it started by reaching on an error with bases loaded to drive in
Kerstin Koenig, who reached earlier in the inning. Bystrycki then drove in three runs with a bases clearing double to right center to give Alvernia the 5-0 lead.
The Golden Wolves added one more in the top of the seventh when Carmella singled to drive in Reinert to give Alvernia the 7-0 win.
Alvernia's offense in game two was led by Carmella and Reinert, who had two hits each. Bystrycki finished with three RBIs and Carmella finished with two.
Riley Shields went the distance on the mound, allowing just three hits on 24 at-bats. She struck out five, and had a perfect game bid through 5 and two thirds before a double in the gap ended the bid.
Alvernia finished it's Florida trip with a record of 6-4 to improve to 7-5 on the season.
The Golden Wolves return home and will host Stevenson University on Wednesday to open up their MAC Commonwealth schedule.
