Alvernia Opens Season With Comeback Win Over Stockton, 60-55

Galloway, NJ (Nov. 10, 2021) - After trailing by ten in the final minutes of the first half, Alvernia University (1-0) was able to complete the comeback and take a 60-55 win over Stockton University (0-2) in Alvernia's 2021-22 season opener at Stockton on Wednesday night.

Alvernia put up 23 points, including 14 off a 14-0 run, in the fourth quarter to outscore the Osprey by ten points and seal the 60-55 win.

The Golden Wolves opened the scoring with Jordan Karmonick knocking down a 3-pointer on Alvernia's first possession to notch the first points of the 2021-22 season. After Alvernia forced a turnover on Stockton's first possession of the game, Alvernia made it a 5-0 game on a layup by Kayla Williams

The two teams traded jumpers on the next two possessions, but then the Osprey knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to take an 8-7 lead midway through the first quarter.

Stockton held Alvernia scoreless for the next five minutes while building up a six point lead of its own, 13-7, with 3:30 left in the first. But, the Golden Wolves flipped the momentum for the remainder of the first quarter as Alvernia held Stockton scoreless and scored four points of its own to make it a two point game in favor of Stockton, 13-11, going into the second quarter.

The Osprey opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 3-point shot, but Alvernia's Taliyah Malone knocked down a 3-pointer of her own to keep it a two point game, 16-14, with 7:47 left in the half.

Alvernia's scoring would go cold for six minutes as the Osprey held the Golden Wolves scoreless while building up its lead to its largest of the game, 24-14, with 1:55 left to go.

A driving layup by Williams that would draw a defensive foul on Stockton sparked Alvernia back to life. Williams converted her and-one opportunity to bring Alvernia within seven, 24-17, with 1:36 left in the half.

Alvernia picked up two more points off made free throws by Malone and Kelly Fetter, and a layup as time expired by Jannelle Robinson brought Alvernia back within three, 24-21, going into the break.

The Golden Wolves scored the opening points of the third quarter with Williams coming out and hitting a jumper to bring Alvernia within one, 24-23. But, Alvernia got in some foul trouble over the next 90 seconds allowing Stockton to build its lead back up to five on four made free throws.

Alvernia got back in its rhythm with Dee McCormick and Karmonick hitting back-to-back jumpers to again bring Alvernia within one, 28-27, with 7:22 left in the third quarter.

Stockton responded with another field goal to go back up by three, 30-27, but Alvernia came right back down the court as Williams knocked down a three to tie the game up at 30-30 with 6:30 left in the third.

A jumper by McCormick 40 seconds later gave Alvernia its first lead since early in the first quarter.

Both teams would trade the lead for the next four minutes, but the Osprey froze Alvernia for the final three minutes of the third quarter as they built the lead back up to a two possession game and took a 42-37 lead over Alvernia going into the fourth quarter.

Stockton scored the opening points of the final frame off a jumper and free throw to take an eight point lead, 45-37, with nine minutes to play.

Cathryn Kramer sparked what would be the game clinching 14-0 run with a layup that came off two offensive boards with 8:34 to play. After Tamia Wessels hit a jumper in the paint to make it a 45-41 game, Kramer made a layup and an ensuing and-one free throw to bring Alvernia within one, 45-44. Back-to-back made free throws by Kramer on Alvernia's next possession gave the Golden Wolves the 46-45 lead with 4:37 to play.

The Osprey continued to foul Alvernia, and Alvernia took advantage. Two more made free throws by Williams extended Alvernia's lead to 48-45. Kramer continued with her hot hand and made another jumper and another free throw to put Alvernia up six, 51-45, with just under three minutes to play.

Stockton's scoreless drought came to an end with 2:28 to play when the Osprey scored five points in 28 seconds to quickly bring it back to a one point game, 51-50, with two minutes to play.

Alvernia did not flinch as Wessels drove down the court and hit a corner three to put Alvernia back up by four, 54-50, with 1:37 remaining.

The Osprey were forced to start fouling the Golden Wolves, and Alvernia continued to find late success at the line. A combo of four made free throws by McCormick and Kramer extended Alvernia's lead back to six, 58-52, with just 35 seconds to play.

Stockton would not go quietly as Theresa Besso knocked down a three to turn it back into a one possession game, 58-55, with eight seconds remaining.

Stockton immediately fouled Alvernia on the inbounds and Karmonick went to the line for the Golden Wolves. The sophomore converted both free throw attempts to seal the 60-55 win for Alvernia.

Kramer led Alvernia with a 13 point, 10 rebound double-double. Williams finished up with 12 points and five rebounds, and both Kramer and Williams finished with four blocks a piece. Nine of 11 Golden Wolves that saw time tonight recorded at least two points.

The Golden Wolves return to action on Saturday at NYU.
