Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | By Marisa Lombardo (Director of Sports Information)

Alvernia Falls To NYU, 82-58

Brooklyn, NY (Nov. 13, 2021) - Alvernia University (1-1) trailed by just one point after the first quarter, but a big second quarter from New York University (2-0) propelled the the Violets to an 82-58 win over Alvernia on Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action in Brooklyn, New York.

NYU led just 18-17 after the first frame, but the Violets put up 23 to Alvernia's 12 to extend its lead going into the break.

The Violets opened the game on a 10-0 run before Alvernia stormed back on a 17-4 run to take the lead. The Golden Wolves got within one, 14-13 with a  Kayla Williams three to bring Alvernia with 3:40 left in the first quarter.  A layup by Tamia Wessels with just under three to play in the first put Alvernia up by one, 15-14.  A layup by Tyra Robinson on the next possession gave Alvernia the three point lead, 17-14, with 2:12 to play.

NYU went on to score the final points of the quarter to take an 18-17 lead into the second quarter.

A jumper from Cathryn Kramer to open the scoring in the second quarter put Alvernia back on top, 19-18. NYU tied, then took the lead, off of two made free throws by the Violets on their next possession.

NYU held Alvernia to just one point over the next four minutes while building up a seven point lead, 28-21.

Alvenria got back within three on a layup by Williams with 3:40 remaining in the half. But, NYU scored the final ten points of the half to take a 41-29 lead into the break.

NYU came out of the break scoring nine of the opening 11 points over the first two minutes to extend its lead to 50-31.

A layup from NYU 90 seconds later gave the Violets their biggest lead so far of the game, 52-32, with 6:31 left in the third.

Alvernia battled back and two made free throws by Jordan Karmonick got Alvernia back within 13, 52-39, with 4:22 left in the third quarter.

The Violets continued to push and a layup with 1:18 left in the third extended NYUs lead back into the 20s, 63-42.

A 3-pointer as time was expiring in the third by Williams made it a 17 point game going into the final frame, 64-47.

NYU did not let up in the fourth quarter. After Alvernia found foul trouble midway through the fourth, NYU took advantage to build its lead and, ultimately, take the 82-58 win over Alvernia.

Despite the loss, Williams posted a career-high 20 points along with two blocks. Taliyah Malone also hit double--digits with ten points on the night.

"To go up against a successful and established program like NYU and not back down shows the fearlessness and heart of this team," said Head Coach Rayne Reber. "There's always things to work on, but our foundation along with effort is there. Despite the final score, there were positives taken away from this game and we will continue to build off them."

Alvernia will look to build on those positives when the Golden Wolves return to action on Monday at Rutgers-Camden.
