Golden Wolves Split With Spartans In Friday Doubleheader

York, Pa. (March 26, 2021) - Alvernia Baseball (7-4-1, 3-2-1) earned a doubleheader split with York College (10-2, 8-2) in MAC Commonwealth baseball action on a windy Friday afternoon at York College.

Alvernia fell in extra innings in game one - which was designated as the seven inning game - 8-7 in eight innings. Game two, which then became designated as a seven inning game, also went extras with Alvernia picking up a 9-6 win in nine innings.

In game one of the doubleheader, York struck first after going hitless the first two innings. The Spartans put up five runs on three hits, including a three run homer to cap off the inning and go up 5-0.

The Golden Wolves left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, and stranded one in scoring position in the top of the fifth. 

Alvernia was able to get some runs back in the top of the fifth, with Brandon Smith driving in Nick Nutile and Mike Cirilli. Alvernia then brought in a third run on an error by the Spartans on Mike Ramundo's at-bat to bring Alvernia within two, 5-3.

York responded in its half of the fifth, scoring two to extend its lead back to 7-3.

Alvernia kept its offense going in the top of the seventh, scoring four to tie it up at 7-7. Nutile started the scoring off by driving in Ethan Brown on a single down the left field line. Jason Kelly kept it going by driving in Nutile and Cirilli on double to the right gap. Ramundo then drove in the game tying run on a single to right, driving in Justin Ayala and tying it up at 7-7.

York broke the tie in the bottom of the eight, scoring the game winning run on a fielding error by Alvernia on a bunt by the Spartans. 

Nutile and Cirilli each finished with two hits and two runs to lead Alvernia's offense.

Shane Ostrowsky got the game one start, striking out four in five innings of work.

In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia struck first with Mike Cirilli hitting a solo home run to left in the second at bat of the game. Thomas Faggioni then doubled to right to bring in Nutile and take a 2-0 lead.

The Spartans responded in their half of the first, hitting three solo home runs to take a 3-2 lead. 

Alvernia retook the lead, scoring two runs on three hits, with RBIs from Joe Ginder and Mike Cirilli, to take a 4-3 lead. 

The Golden Wolves extended their lead to two runs in the top of the fourth with Ginder doubling to left center to bring in Kelly and put Alvernia up 5-3.

The Spartans got one back in the bottom of the fourth on its fourth home run of the game to make it 5-4 in favor of the Golden Wolves.

The Spartans then tied it up at 5-5 on a single to right to drive in the game tying run.

After a leadoff triple in the bottom of the sixth, York took the 6-5 lead on a sacrifice fly to center.

Alvernia tied it back up at 7-7 in the top of the seventh on a Faggioni double to right to score Cirilli.

The Golden Wolves broke the tie in the top of the ninth with Faggioni driving in Cirilli on a single through the right side to put Alvernia up 8-7. Alvernia added two runs to its lead on a Luca Grammatica single to right to drive in Faggioni and Nutile and give Alvernia the 9-7 lead.

Cirilli, who took over pitching duties in the bottom of the seventh, picked up the win after striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth.

Cirilli also led Alvernia's offensive efforts, going 4-for-5 at the plate and scoring three runs and driving in two more.

Alvernia returns to the field tomorrow to complete its series with the Spartans at Angelica Park.
