Spartans Better Golden Wolves, 62-53

Kramer Breaks Single-Season Block Record with 63rd of the Season

BOX SCORE York, Pa. (Jan. 22, 2022) - York College (14-3, 8-1) used a quick 9-2 run to open the fourth quarter and pull out of reach from Alvernia University (8-8, 2-7) as the Spartans came away with a 62-53 win over Alvernia on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action at York.

Trailing by just five points, 40-35, entering the third quarter, Alvernia scored just two points in the opening five minutes of the final frame as York put up nine to pull ahead to a 49-37 advantage. The Golden Wolves could not close the deficit as York came away with the 62-53 win.

Alvernia opened the scoring as Kayla Williams knocked down a quick 3-pointer following a Cathryn Kramer rebound off of York's first possession.

York responded with a layup of its own, but Jordan Karmonick took Alvernia's next possession in for a driving layup under contact and converted her ensuing and-one opportunity to put Alvernia up four, 6-2, after just 90 seconds of play.

The Spartans worked their way back in and tied it up at 6-6 before taking the 7-6 lead on an and-one of their own.

The Golden Wolves and Spartans went back and forth over the next five minutes, and Alvernia retook the lead, 15-14,  on a Tamia Wessels layup with 1:20 left in the first.

The Spartans scored the final four points of the first quarter to take an 18-15 advantage into the second.

Both teams struggled to get into a rhythm to open the second quarter, with the only two points of the opening three minutes coming off of a layup from York's Kayla Ferris.

A layup from Taliyah Malone at the 6:42 mark ended Alvernia's scoreless drought and brought the Golden Wolves within three, 20-17.

Three minutes later, York held a 24-18 advantage, but a Wessels layup and two made free throws from Williams brought Alvernia back within two, 24-22, with 2:43 to play in the half.

York knocked down a jumper to make it 26-22 with 1:34 to play in the second, but neither team scored in the final 94 seconds as the Spartants took a 26-22 advantage into the second half.

York came out of the half fast and made two layups within the opening 45 seconds to extend its lead to 30-22. A 3-pointer by Karmonick put Alvernia back within five, 30-25, with 8:18 left in the third quarter.

A layup and two made free throws from the Spartans over the next minute put York back up by nine, but another Karmonick three made it a six point game, 34-28, with six minutes to play in the third.

Three minutes later, a layup from Williams made it a one possession game, 36-33. Both teams went scoreless for the next two minutes, until York made back-to-back jumpers to go up 40-33 with 29 seconds to play in the third.

As time expired in the third, Tyra Robinson was fouled while attempting a buzzer-beater outside the arc. Robinson went to the line and converted two of three to make it a five point game, 40-35, going into the fourth quarter.

Alvernia was held to just two made free throws in the opening five minutes while York scored nine points of its own to make it a 49-37 game with five minutes to play.

The Golden Wolves got within eight points, 53-45, on a Tyra Robinson free throw with 2:46 to play but could not get any closer as York came away with the 62-53 win.

Karmonick led Alvernia with 14 points and seven rebounds. Malone finished with 12 points, three assists, and three rebounds. Williams led Alvernia's rebounding efforts with eight boards and added nine points.

Kramer finished with seven points, five rebounds, and one block. Her block this afternoon gave her 63 on the season and broke the single-season block record that Kramer previously set her first year. Kramer holds block records in the single-game, single-season, and career categories. Kramer broke the Alvernia career block record when the Golden Wolves hosted the Spartans back in December.

Alvernia has a mid-week bye this week and will return to action on Saturday to host Stevenson University.
