Field Hockey Clinches Postseason Appearance with Win at Stevenson

Owings Mills, Md. (Oct. 22, 2022) - Alvernia University (11-5, 5-2) scored five goals in the first half en route to a 5-1 win over Stevenson University (6-11, 2-6) in MAC Commonwealth field hockey action on Saturday at Stevenson.

With the win, Alvernia secured a spot in the MAC Commonwealth playoff with one regular season Commonwealth game to go. 

Both teams had early looks, but Alvernia's attempt was saved while Stevenson's shot was blocked.

The Golden Wolves broke through in the 7th minute with Brianna Burkholder connecting with Abbie Buck for the 1-0 Alvernia lead.

The Golden Wolve sent in three more shots on goal over the next six minutes, all of which were saved. Alvernia then was able to get its second one by the Mustangs with Madison Speece finding Felicia Getz to give Alvernia a 2-0 lead with two and a half minutes to play in the first quarter.

Alvernia tacked onto its lead early in the second quarter with Kathryn Palmer connecting with Rori Caulfield to give the Golden Wolves a 3-0 lead.

Buck then netted her second goal of the evening in the 21st minute, this time with an assist from Brooke Spezialetti as Buck deflected in a Spezialetti shot.

With just under two minutes to play in the first half, Alvernia made it a 5-0 game with Palmer firing in a goal on an assist from Spezialetti.

Just one shot was recorded in the third quarter - a blocked attempt by Stevenson - as Alvernia held the 5-0 lead going into the final frame.

The Mustangs scored its only goal of the game in the 48th minute to end the shutout bid of the Golden Wolves.

Alvernia did not take a shot in the fourth quarter as the game worked itself to the 5-1 final. 

Buck led the way with two goals, while Palmer finished with a goal and an assist and Spezialetti finished with two assists.

Lexi Boettcher, Annika Galen, and Hannah Wolfe split time in net for Alvernia in the win.

The Golden Wolves close out their MAC Commonwealth schedule on Wednesday hosting Widener.
