Field Hockey Secures Three-Seed with 2-0 Win Over Widener

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 26, 2022) - Alvernia University (12-5, 6-2) did not allow a shot on goal en route to a 2-0 win over Widener University (10-7, 5-3) on Wednesday night in the MAC Commonwealth regular season finale at Alvernia.

With the win, Alvernia secured the #3 seed in the MAC Commonwealth postseason. The Golden Wolves will travel to #2 York College on Wednesday evening for a semifinal matchup.

Alvernia had four shot opportunities in the first quarter, but were unable to connect as the game headed into the second quarter scoreless.

The Golden Wolves got on the board five minutes into the second quarter when a shot by Kathryn Palmer was saved by the Widener goalie. The save was deflected into the air and batted into goal by Rori Caulfield to put Alvernia on the board, 1-0.

Alvernia had three penalty corner shots in the final 10 minutes of the first half, but could not expand on its lead.

Just 22 seconds into the second half, Alvernia was awarded a penalty stroke following a foul by Widener's goalie. Brooke Spezialetti went up to the line for the Golden Wolves and fired one into the left side of the net and past the reach of Widener's goalie to give Alvernia the 2-0 lead.

While the Golden Wolves could not build on their lead, they prevented the Pride from attempting a shot on goal as the Golden Wolves came away with the 2-0 win.

Lexi Boettcher picked up the win in net for Alvrnia with the shutout.

Alvernia closes out the regular season with a non-conference game at Stockton on Saturday.
