Fast First Half Powers King's Past Alvernia, 41-14

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 29, 2022) - King's College (7-1, 6-1) scored 28 first half points en route to a 41-14 win over Alvernia University (2-6, 1-5) on Saturday afternoon in MAC football action at Alvernia.

The win for King's marked their sixth straight and also marked their fifth win on the road.

The Monarchs jumped out to a 7-0 lead after just over a minute of action when Monte McMorris was picked off on Alvernia's opening drive and returned for 38 yards. The Monarchs needed just two plays to find the end zone for the first time of the afternoon when Shemar Ellis rushed for the four yard touchdown.

Alvernia punted away its next drive to the King's 25 yard line. The Monarchs got to work and put together a 12 play, 5:56 drive that ended with a 17 yard touchdown pass to Tyler Carey with 5:10 to go in the first quarter. The Monarch's converted the extra point for the 14-0 lead.

The Golden Wolves and Monarchs traded possessions the remainder of the first quarter as King's took the 14-0 lead into the second frame.

Alvernia picked up a first down to open the second quarter, Alvernia was forced to punt it away after back-to-back incompletions.

King's took over at its own 12 yard line with 13:19 to go in the first half and began to make its way down the field. After Monarch quarterback Tyler Moore completed a 31-yard pass down field to the Alvernia 29 yard line, the Monarch's punched it in for its third score of the game two plays later on a 14 yard touchdown run. Following the made extra point, the Monarchs led 21-0.

After Alvernia traded three and outs, the Golden Wolves took over on its own 19 with 3:27 to play in the first half. But, McMorris threw his second pick of the afternoon to the Alvernia 32 yard line. Following a 15 yard penalty on Alvernia, the ball was spotted on the Alvernia 47 yard line.

The Monarch's scored their second touchdown off a turnover six plays later with Russell Minor-Shaw taking one in for a 20 yard touchdown to give King's the 28–0 lead.

Alvernia ran out the clock to take the game into half with King's leading 28-0.

The Monarchs opened the second half receiving the kickoff and once again got to work on their own 22 yard line. King's made its way down to the Alvernia 22 yard line and came up two yards short on a long 3rd and 17. King's opted to go for the field goal, but it was no good as the game stayed at 28-0.

Alvernia started its drive with a six yard pass from McMorris to Dachan Thompson for six yards, followed by a 41 yard pass to Joseph Perkins across the middle. On a 6-yard run by EJ Lee on the next play, King's was knocked for a facemask to move the ball another 15 yards up the field. Two plays later, McMorris found Owen Morton across the right side and into the end zone to put Alvernia on the board. Brett Conrad converted the extra point to make it a 28-7 game.

Alvernia and King's closed out the third quarter trading possessions as King's took the three-score lead into the fourth quarter.

King's opened the fourth quarter with the ball on the Alvernia 20 yard line. Two plays into the fourth quarter, King's scored its fifth touchdown of the game - this time on a 6 yard rush - to go up 35-7 on Alvernia with 13:12 to play. King's extra point attempt was taken by female kicker Alyssa Accordino and the attempt was good to mark Accordino's second career PAT.

Alvernia took over on its own 22 yard line and a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty pushed Alvernia up to its 40 yard line. The Golden  Wolves crossed into King's territory on a 13 yard reception by EJ Lee, and a six yard rush by Lee put Alvernia to the King's 35.  Alvernia then went for a trick play option as Kyle Stanton passed to a wide-open Neeko Scurlcok in the end zone for a 35 yard touchdown reception. Following the extra point, Alvernia trailed 35-14 with just under 11 minutes to play.

King's answered with another touchdown-scoring drive as Moore connected with Tommy Souriyavong on a six play, 47 yard touchdown drive.

Alvernia could not get anything else going as the Monarch's game away with the 41-14 win.

McMorris finished under center going 15-for-30 with 148 yards and a touchdown. Lee finished with 35 yards rushing and 52 yards receiving. Jakeem Jackson led the Alvernia defense with 11 tackles and one pass breakup.

Alvernia will not leave Reading, Pa. the rest of the season as the Golden Wolves head to Albright College next week and then close out the season at home against FDU Florham on November 12.
