Polly Mathys

Polly Mathys - Friends of Alvernia Athletics Award

This year Alvernia introduced the Friends of Alvernia Athletics Awards. This award is given to a non-athlete who, in some manner, has made an extraordinary contribution to the success of the intercollegiate athletic program at Alvernia. This year, Alvernia announced its inaugural honoree, Polly Mathys.

Polly Mathys has been an educator for 44 years, including 34 years served at Alvernia. She was an Assistant Professor of Computer information Systems from 1986-2020 and served as the Academic Support Center Learning Coordinator from 2016 to 2020.

Polly is a staple of Alvernia Athletics, but her connection was accidental. In 1993, Polly was pulled into a basketball game by a colleague and was immediately hooked. She loved to watch the students work hard to excel at something they loved. From then on, she was Alvernia’s biggest fan.

In 2004, Polly was named Alvenria’s NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative. That was a role she held until her retirement in 2020.

As Alvernia’s FAR, she constantly worried about a student-athletes’ commitment to academics. She would always ask a student after their game “Nice Game. How’s your term paper coming along?”

The one attribute of Alvernia’s athletes she admired the most was the ability to be coached during a game and change their behavior/ actions in real-time. Polly shared, “I am drawn to athletics because the student-athletes had attributes I wish I had- persistence, a realistic assessment of their own skills, acceptance of guidance by someone else, and a strong sense of being part of a team.”

Serving as the NCAA FAR was Polly’s favorite part of her tenure at Alvernia. She was, is, and continues to be Alvernia’s student-athlete’s biggest fan. It’s also safe to say she has thousands of student-athlete alumni who are a big fan of hers.
