Big Fourth Quarter Powers Alvernia Past Immaculata, 19-15

Lackner Scores Seven, Alvernia Off to Best Start In Over a Decade

Reading, Pa. (March 16, 2022) - Alvernia University (5-2) scored eight goals in the fourth quarter - including five goals in 2:01 - to overtake Immaculata University (2-5) and come away with a 19-15 win over the Mighty Macs on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Alvernia.

Leading Alvernia 13-11 with 10:26 left in the fourth, the Mighty Macs were given their third, and then fourth, yellow cards of the game - making the penalty non-releasable. Alvernia took advantage. The Golden Wolves scored five goals - four of them man-up, and three of them from Erika Whitmoyer - over the next 2:01 to overtake the lead. The Golden Wolves didn't look back the rest of the game as they came away with the 19-15 victory.

With the win, Alvernia improves to 5-2 after its first seven games. It's Alvernia's best seven game start since 2011, when Alvernia started out 7-0.

Immaculata netted the opener of the game off a goal off an Alvernia turnover in the Immaculata attacking zone.

The Golden Wolves responded on the next draw control with Meagan Moky evening things up at 1-1 with 11 minutes left in the first. But, two minutes later, the Mighty Macs scored on a man-up free position to take the 2-1 lead.

The back-and-forth continued with Haleigh Lackner scoring on a free position opportunity of her own, again off the ensuing draw.

The Mighty Macs then scored two goals in the next 40 seconds to take a 4-2 lead, but Alvernia responded right back.

Olivia McCambly scored on a free position to get within one, 4-3, and Moky's second of the evening evened things up at 4-4 with 2:09 remaining in the first.

The Mighty Macs scored the final goal of the first, again off a successful free position, to take a 5-4 lead into the second. They then scored the opener of the second to extend its lead back to two, 6-4.

A successful Lackner free position brought Alvernia back within one, but Immaculata extended it back to a two goal lead on a goal from Tessa Libertoscioli with 12:25 left in the first.

A successful man-up free position from Lackner again brought Alvernia within one, 7-6, with just over eight minutes left in the first half. But,  Immaculata scored back-to-back goals to take its largest lead of the game, 9-6.

Just one goal was scored in the final seven minutes of the first half, and it came off the stick of Moky to secure her hat-trick and bring Alvernia within two, 9-7, going into the second half.

Back-to-back Lackner goals to open the third quarter evened the game up at 9-9, but Alvernia could still not overtake the Mighty Macs as Immaculata retook the lead, 10-9, on a free position goal with 8:34 remaining in the third.

The back-and-forth continued throughout the third quarter, with Alvernia responding to each Immaculata goal to make it an 11-11 game going into the final frame. McCambly and Mackenzie McKinny were responsible for Alvernia's 10th and 11th goals of the game to close out the third quarter.

The Mighty Macs scored the opening two goals of the fourth to retake a two goal lead, 13-11, with 11:35 to go.

But, just over a minute later, Alvernia's offense came to life. Erika Whitmoyer got things started with a man-up free position to get Alvernia within one, 13-12, and Moky evened it up at 13-13 28 seconds later.

Another Whitmoyer goal gave Alvernia the 14-13 lead, and Lackner kept things rolling with her sixth goal of the game - off the assist of Whitmoyer - to put Alvernia up 15-13.

As Immaculata's two minute card was releasing, Whitmoyer capped off the five goal run with her third goal in two minutes to give Alvernia the 16-13 lead with 8:25 to play.

Whitmoyer continued her hot hand two minutes later with her fourth goal in as many minutes to give Alvernia the 17-13 advantage.

Immaculata ended Alvernia's scoring spree with a free position goal with 4:27 to play to get within three, 17-14.

Taylor Sundstrom and Lackner then rattled off two more over the next 90 seconds to extend Alvernia's lead to five, 19-14.

Immaculata scored on a free position with 17 seconds left, but Alvernia did not allow anymore as the Golden Wolves took the 19-15 lead.

Lackner scored a career high seven goals and added two assists to lead Alvernia. Lackner's seven goals is a career high for the sophomore. It's also the most goals scored in a game by an Alvernia player since Brooke Campione scored eight for Alvernia against Lycoming on March 29, 2014.

Whitmoyer and Moky each finished with four goals, and Whitmoyer also added three assists. Four goals is a career-high for Moky.

Kasey Fox picked up the win in net for Alvernia with a career-high 16 saves.

The Golden Wolves return to action on Wednesday, March 23rd at Elizabethtown.
