10-Goal Fourth Quarter Lifts Alvernia Past Elizabethtown, 18-13

Whitmoyer Nets 200th Career Point, Alvernia Defeats E-Town for First Time in Program History

Elizabethtown, Pa. (March 23, 2022) - After trailing for the majority of the game, Alvernia University (6-2) scored ten goals in the fourth quarter to take the lead and pull away from Elizabethtown College (1-7) for an 18-13 win over the Blue Jays in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Elizabethtown.

The 18-13 win over the Blue Jays is Alvernia first win over its former MAC Commonwealth foe in program history. Prior to this afternoon, Alvernia was 0-11 against Elizabethtown.

Erika Whitmoyer scored a career-high eight goals and added one assist to lead Alvernia and reach the 200 career-point marker. She is just the fifth women's lacrosse player in program history to reach the 200 point club. She joins the ranks of Alyssa Verrillo ('13, 226 career-points), Felicia Sippel ('11, 248 career-points), Allison Bainbridge ('13, 262 career-points), and Sarah George ('12, 278 career-points).  Whitmoyer also reached the milestone in just 43 games compared to the 70+ games played by the previous 200 point club members.

Alvernia led the contest early, with Haleigh Lackner scoring the opening goal of the game just over 40 seconds into the action. Elizabethtown evened it up at 1-1 on its next possession, but back-to-back goals from Whitmoyer put Alvernia up 3-1 after five minutes of play.

The Blue Jays then finished out the opening quarter on a 4-0 run to take the 5-3 lead, and Elizabethtown then scored the opening goal of the second quarter to go up 6-3 on Alvernia.

A Whitmoyer goal at the 6:46 mark brought Alvernia back within two, 6-4, but Elizabethtown scored a man-down goal with just under four minutes left to score the final goal of the half and take a 7-4 lead into the break.

Alvernia opened the second half on a man-up opportunity and Whitmoyer took advantage, netting her fourth of the afternoon to bring Alvernia within two, 7-5.

The Blue Jays responded to go back up by three, 8-5, but back-to-back goals from Hailey Miller and Meagan Moky brought Alvernia within one, 8-7, just past the midway point of the third quarter.

Elizabethtown went on a 2-1 run to close out the third quarter and take a 10-8 lead into the final quarter.

Whitmoyer took the opening draw of the fourth quarter straight down for a goal to bring Alvernia within one once again, 10-9.

Elizabethtown answered once again to regain a two goal lead, but Alvernia then began to pour it on.

A Natalie Frantz goal opened the gates for Alvernia and brought the Golden Wolves within one, 11-10, and a man-up Lackner goal off a Whitmoyer assist evened the game up at 11-11 with just over 10 minutes to play.

Alvernia then took the lead on the second Frantz goal in just under three minutes to take the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game with 9:43 to play.

Elizabethtown evened it up for the final time at 12 a piece until Alvernia began to pull away.

Alvernia scored six goals over six minutes to take an 18-12 lead over Elizabethtown. Lackner scored the go-ahead goal on a successful free-position shot at the 8:02 mark.

Whitmoyer then scored back-to-back goals for her 199th and 200th career points to put Alvernia up 15-12 with just over five minutes to play.

Moky and Whitmoyer then each scored man-up goals to put Alvernia up 17-12, and Moky scored the final goal of the evening for Alvernia with two minutes to play to give Alvernia the 18-12 advantage.

Elizabethtown scored the final goal of the contest, but it was too late for the Blue Jays as Alvernia came away with the 18-13 win.

Whitmoyer led Alvernia's offense with her career-high eight goals. Kasey Fox picked up the win in net for Alvernia with eight saves.

Alvernia returns to action on Saturday, hosting Marymount.
