Reading, Pa. (March 26, 2022)- Alvernia University (6-3) suffered a 21-10 loss to Marymount University (9-1) in a non-conference women's lacrosse matchup Saturday afternoon at Alvernia.
The Saints kicked off the scoring in the first quarter, recording a goal with 13:57 left in the stanza. The Golden Wolves responded minutes later, as
Olivia McCambly took advantage of a free position attempt to slip one past the goalie.
Marymount's offense responded midway through the quarter, reclaiming the lead and making the score 2-1 with 6:38 left in the stanza. The Saints used the momentum, growing their lead and ending the first quarter on top of the Golden Wolves, 8-1.
Alvernia opened the second quarter with a goal from
Erika Whitmoyer in the first two minutes. The Saints responded quickly before
Haleigh Lackner cut the deficit back down to six and made it a 9-3 game.
Marymount grew its lead shortly after Alvernia's goal, making it a seven-point game once again. Whitmoyer tallied her second goal of the contest in response, making it a 10-4 game in favor of the Saints with 11:28 left in the stanza.
Over the next seven minutes, Marymount kept firing, racking up four more goals and taking a 14-4 lead with 4:06 left in the first half. Marymount and Alvernia traded two goals in the final four minutes of the contest, with Whitmoyer and
Sherrin Smith each netting a goal. The Saints ended the first half on top of the Golden Wolves 16-6.
The Golden Wolves' offense started the third quarter with two quick goals as
Sophia Ruocco and
Natalie Frantz each found the back of the net. The Saints responded with 11:39 left in the stanza, making it a 17-8 game. Whitmoyer responded, slipping a shot past the goalie and bringing the deficit back down to eight.
Marymount scored a goal just a minute later before
Meagan Moky responded with her own goal to make it an 18-10 game. Over the next ten minutes, the Saints recorded one more goal, ending the third stanza on top of Alvernia, 19-10.
The fourth quarter saw the Saints start strong, taking a ten-point lead with 13:17 left in the contest. Throughout the quarter, the Golden Wolves were unable to find the back of the net while the Saints secured another insurance goal. Marymount ended the contest on top of Alvernia, 21-10.
Whitmoyer led the Golden Wolves with four goals in the contest.
Kasey Fox ended the contest with six saves, while Katherine Giannaras secured five saves.
The Golden Wolves return to action Wednesday as they travel to York to start conference play
