Owings Mills, Md. (April 2, 2022) - After dropping game one, 6-2, to Stevenson University (6-18-1, 1-1), Alvernia University (9-15-1, 3-1) routed the Mustangs, 13-4, in game two for the MAC Commonwealth baseball series split on Saturday at Stevenson.
In game one of the afternoon, the Golden Wolves were held without a hit until the sixth inning while Stevenson took a 6-0 advantage.
A squeeze by Billy Dougar marked Alvernia's first hit of the game in the top of the sixth and scored Kyler Newton, who led off the inning by reaching on an error.
Alvernia was again held hitless in the seventh and eighth, but were able to put a runner on to lead off the ninth after Zach Rogacki singled to lead off the inning. Brandon Smith then drove in Rogacki on a single up the middle to make it 6-2 with two outs. The Mustangs were able to force an out on the next at-bat for the 6-2 final.
Jake Reese had the start on the mound for Alvernia, going five innings and striking out three.
In game two of the afternoon, Stevenson struck first with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the first to go up 1-0.
Alvernia responded in the top of the second with two runs. The Golden Wolves evened it up at 1-1 on a bases loaded walk of their own on Rogacki's at-bat. With the bases still loaded, Stevenson was called for a balk, advancing each runner and bringing Mike Ramundo home for the 2-1 lead.
Stevenson evened it up at 2-2 on a single to right in the bottom of the third.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Alvernia's offense exploded in the fifth with six runs on four hits. Lucas Floyd drove in the first run of the inning on a sac fly to right field, and a Smith double to right drove in two more for the 5-2 lead. Later in the inning with two on and two outs, Ramundo blasted a three run homer to put Alvernia up 8-2 and cap off the inning.
The Mustangs got two back in their half of the fifth, but Alvernia added four to its lead in the sixth with Floyd, Thomas Faggioni, and Newton each driving in runs to give Alvernia the 12-4 lead.
The Golden Wolves held Stevenson hitless the rest of the way while adding one to its lead in the top of the ninth on a Floyd sac-fly for the 13-4 final.
David Linsalata got the win on the mound, striking out two. Jake Umans came in as relief and struck out seven.
Rogacki led Alvernia in game two with three hits, and Floyd and Ramundo each finished with three RBIs on two hits.
Alvernia is back in action tomorrow, hosting Moravian.
