Reading, Pa. (April 3, 2022) - Alvernia University (10-15-1) held off a late rally by Moravian University (11-9) to come away with a 6-5 non-conference win over the Greyhounds on Sunday afternoon in baseball action at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves led 5-0 through five innings before the Greyhounds began to chip away. With the game-tying run on third with two outs in the top of the ninth, Alvernia reliever Christian Burrus caught Paul Croyle looking for out number three to end the threat.

Alvernia got on the board with an RBI single by Thomas Faggioni to drive in Joe Gider for the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Alvernia pitcher Shayne Ostrowsky threw a one-hitter through the first four innings to keep the Greyhounds off the board while Alvernia held onto the 1-0 lead.

The Golden Wolves then built on their lead in the bottom of the fourth, plating three runs on a bases-loaded triple by Mike Ramundo for the 4-0 lead. Brandon Smith added one later in the inning, driving in Ramundo on a single to the right gap for the 5-0 lead.

The Greyhound offense finally broke through in the top of the sixth, getting three back on four hits to cut Alvernia's lead to two, 5-3.

The Golden Wolves got one back in the bottom of the seventh with Faggioni driving in Lucas Floyd on a double to the left gap in what would be a crucial insurance run for the 6-3 lead.

Moravian got back within two, 6-4, in the top of the eighth on an RBI double to left field.

Alvernia could not add to its lead in the bottom half of the eighth after being retired in order.

With two on and no one out in the top of the ninth, Christian Burrus came to the mound in relief. The Greyhounds layed down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third, but picked up their first out of the inning. Alvernia then gave up a run to pick up the second out of the inning on a groundout to shortstop. With the tying-run on third, Burrus dealt a gem for the called third strike and final out of the game as Alvernia came away with the 6-5 win.

Faggioni led Alvernia's offense with three hits and two RBIs.

Ostrowsky picked up the win, striking out two and allowing six hits in five and two-thirds innings. Burrus picked up the save in his ninth inning relief appearance.

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Tuesday at Eastern University for game one of a MAC Commonwealth series.
