Reading, Pa. (April 2, 2022) - After an early tie between Stevenson University (6-4, 1-0) and Alvernia University (6-5, 0-2), the Mustangs pulled away and never looked back en route to a 23-7 win over the Golden Wolves on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse action at Alvernia.
After the Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead after just under two minutes of action, Alvernia immediately responded with Erika Whitmoyer finding Olivia McCambly to even the game up at 1-1.
The tie did not last long as the Mustangs rattled off six goals over the next nine minutes to take a 7-1 advantage.
A successful free position goal by Alvernia's Haleigh Lackner stopped the Mustang scoring burst and marked the final goal of the first quarter as Alvernia trailed Stevenson 7-2 going into the second.
Whitmoyer opened the second quarter scoring to bring Alvernia within four, 7-4, but the Golden Wolves did not get any closer the rest of the way.
Alvernia was outscored 5-2 the remainder of the quarter with Alvernia's goals coming from Whitmoyer and Lackner as the Mustangs took a 12-5 lead into the second half.
The Mustangs held Alvernia scoreless for nearly the entire third quarter while adding six to its lead. Meagan Moky kept Alvernia from going scoreless in the quarter after converting a man-up opportunity for Alvernia's sixth goal of the game as the Mustangs took an 18-6 lead into the final frame.
The Mustangs outscored Alvernia 5-1 in the final quarter - with Alvernia scoring the final goal of the game off the stick of McCambly - for the 23-7 final.
Kasey Fox and Katharine Giannaras split time in net for a combined 11 saves.
Whitmoyer led Alvernia with two goals, one assist, and four draw controls. Lackner and McCambly also finished with two goals each.
Alvernia returns to action on Wednesday to host #15 Messiah University at 4:00 PM.
