Alvernia Falls Short to Widener, 10-6

Reading, Pa. (April 20, 2022) - Widener University (9-5, 4-1) held Alvernia University (8-7, 2-4) to just two second-half goals as the Pride defeated the Golden Wolves 10-6 on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse action at Alvernia. 

The Golden Wolves were tied with the Pride after the first quarter and trailed by just one goal going into the half. The Pride then held Alvernia scoreless in the third and allowed just two goals in the fourth as they defeated Alvernia 10-6.

The Pride jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after two gals in the opening 80 seconds of action.

A goal by Erika Whitmoyer at the 9:28 mark put the Golden Wolves on the board, and a goal from Haleigh Lackner just under three minutes later evened things up at 2-2. 

Whitmoyer then connected with Natalie Frantz with 3:32 left in the first quarter to give Alvernia the 3-2 advantage.

The Pride responded less than a minute later with a successful free position goal to even the game up at 3-3 going into the second quarter.

Widener won the opening draw of the second frame and scored a goal off the opening possession to take a 4-3 lead.

A free position goal by Whitmoyer evened the game up at 4-4 with 9:42 remaining in the quarter as Whitmoyer recorded her 60th goal of the season.

The game went scoreless for the next seven minutes until the Pride broke the 4-4 tie with a goal from Gab Cohen.

Alvernia had two free position attempts in the final minute of the quarter, but could not even it up as Widener took the 5-4 lead into the second half. 

Widener scored four goals in the opening five minutes of the second half to jump out to a 9-4 lead.

Alvernia held the Pride scoreless the rest of the quarter, but the Golden Wolves could not find the back of the net to get any closer as Widener took a 9-4 lead into the final frame. 

Widener opened the fourth quarter scoring to push its lead to six, 10-4, but Alvernia got back within five as Lackner recorded her second goal of the game with 12:35 remaining.

Alvernia held Widener scoreless the rest of the way while Lackner added her third of the night to get Alvernia within four, 10-6. The Golden Wolves could not get any closer, though, as Widener ran out the clock for the 10-6 win over Alvernia. 

Lackner led Alvernia with three goals, and Whitmoyer finished with two goals and one assist. Frantz also recorded one goal and one assist for the Golden WOlves.

Kasey Fox played all 60 minutes in net for Alvernia, making nine saves.

The Golden Wolves have the weekend bye before returning to action at Albright on Wednesday for its penultimate game of the regular season.
