Reading, Pa. (April 27, 2022) - Alvernia University's (8-8, 2-5)
Erika Whitmoyer broke Alvernia's single-season points record, but the Golden Wolves fell short to Albright College (4-12, 2-5) in a 15-9 setback on Wednesday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse action at Albright.
Whitmoyer entered the game tied with the single-season points record. She scored Alvernia's second goal of the game to break the record of 94 points previously held by Sarah George that was set in 2012. Whitmoyer ended the afternoon with seven points, four goals and three assists, to surpass the century mark on the season. Â
Alvernia trailed the Lions by just one goal, 7-6, after the first half of action. But, the Lions used their six goal third quarter to outscore Alvernia 8-3 in the second half as Albright came away with the 15-9 win.
The Lions jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with three goals in the opening seven minutes.Â
Alvernia then got back within one, 3-2 off of goals from Haleigh Lackner and Whitmoyer. Whitmoyer's goal marked her 95th point of the season to set a new Alvernia record.
The Lions scored the final two of the first quarter to take a 5-2 lead going into the second.
Alvernia scored the opening three goals of the second quarter to even things up at 5-5. The first goal of the three goal run came from Whitmoyer and Olivia McCambly recorded the final two of the run, both of them assisted by Whitmoyer.Â
Albright retook the lead on a goal with 8:28 remaining in the second quarter to go up 6-5, but Alvernia evened things up on a goal from Lackner four minutes later.
The Lions scored the final goal of the first half to take a 7-6 advantage into the break.
Albright came out of the break fast, scoring two goals in two minutes to push its lead to 9-6.Â
Whitmoyer stopped Albright's quick burst with her third goal of the afternoon to bring Alvernia back within two, 9-7, but Albright then rattled off four more goals to push its lead 13-7.
Whitmoyer's fourth goal of the day marked the final goal of the third quarter as Albright took the 13-8 lead into the final quarter.Â
Albright scored twice more in the fourth quarter to push it to 15-8, and Alvernia's Megan Moky recorded the final goal of the afternoon for the 15-9 final.
Kasey Fox made nine saves in net for Alvernia, and
Kirsten Lake added three. Whitmoyer's seven points led Alvernia's offense.
Alvernia concludes its regular season on Saturday with a home contest against Lebanon Valley.Â
