Wyomissing, Pa. (Jan. 13, 2023) - Alvernia University (5-8-2, 4-6-1) played to a 3-3 draw on Friday night against Chatham University (8-4-1, 7-3-1), and the Golden Wolves took a 2-1 shootout over the Cougars in UCHC men's ice hockey action.

The Golden Wolves led 2-0 through two periods and were up 3-1 with less than five minutes to play. But, the Cougars continued to fight and scored two goals in less than a minute to even the game up at 3-3. Neither team could break the tie in overtime as the game moved into a shootout. 

The shootout is formatted as a best of three, but both sides needed eight opportunities. The Golden Wolves finally broke through with Peter Falivena converting on Alvernia's eighth attempt.

The Golden Wolves struck first after 7:19 of action. Falivena came out of the box after serving a minor penalty and fired a shot to the opposite side of the net off the blue line. The shot rocketed past the Chatham goalie and into net to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead.

The Cougars outshot the Golden Wolves 12-8 on goal in the first period, but Alvernia was able to hold the 1-0 advantage going into the second frame. 

Alvernia had just nine shots on net in the second period, but Falivena was able to net his second of the night off a deflection on the shot of Logan vande Meerakker.

The Golden Wolves killed off 45 seconds of a power play and took the 2-0 lead into the final 20 minutes.

The Cougars got one back just under five minutes into the third period with a power play goal. But, Alvernia was able to return it to a two goal game on a power play goal by Sawyer Senior five minutes later.

Alvernia's two goal lead lasted about six minutes until Chatham made it a one-goal game on an even strength goal. 57 seconds and an Alvernia penalty later, the Cougars evened it up at 3-3 with 3:26 to play.

The Golden Wolves stopped four late shot on goal opportunities by Chatham to send the game to overtime at 3-3.

Alvernia played a good amount of the overtime period trying to kill a penalty. The Golden Wolves kept the Cougars from the sudden-victory goal with three blocked shots by CJ Boyd to force the game into a shootout.

After five unsuccessful penalty shot attempts by both sides in the shootout period, Alvernia broke through on a made attempt by Vincent Servizzi.

The Golden Wolves and Maroons continued to match misses after Servizzi's make, until Alvernia faced a must-make situation on the eighth go around after a successful attempt by the Cougars. The Golden Wolves sent Falivena to the line, and he converted to secure the shootout win for the Golden Wolves.

Falivena finished the night with two goals alongside his shootout make. Vande Meerakker finished with two assists. Boyd finished with five blocked shots, including his three crucial blocks in overtime. Colin Cain finished the night in net with 45 saves.

Alvernia and Chatham will be back in action at Body Zone on Saturday.
