Golden Wolves Fall to Cougars in OT, 4-3

Reading, Pa (January 14, 2023) - Alvernia University (5-9-2, 4-7-1) fell to Chatham University (9-4-1, 8-3-1) 4-3, in overtime in UCHC men's ice hockey action Saturday night at BodyZone. 

The Golden Wolves fired 15 shots with ten going on goal in a scoreless first period with Logan vande Meerakker tallying three shots on goal and Max Cole added three as the game went into the first intermission tied at zero. 

Alvernia took the lead early in the second period when Sawyer Senio netted the first goal of the game just over a minute into the period. Jason Finan and Christian Dahl both recorded assists as the Golden Wolves jumped out to a 1-0 lead. 

Alvernia rattled off seven shots in the next seven minutes before Senio tallied his second goal of the game thanks to assists from Finan and Hunter Alden to make it a 2-0 game nine minutes into the second period in favor of the Golden Wolves. 

Chatham tallied nine shots in the next seven minutes with Alvernia's Colin Cain saving four shots, preserving the Golden Wolves 2-0 advantage. 

Alvernia made it 3-0 with 2:46 left to play in the second period when Finan added his name to the score sheet thanks to an assist from Matthew Davies as Alvernia headed into the final intermission with a three goal advantage. 

Chatham pulled one back just under four minutes into the third period when Andrew Warhoftig netted a short-handed goal thanks to an assist from Carson Grainer to make it a 3-1 game with 16 minutes left in the third. 

Both Chatham and Alvernia traded shots back and forth but could not find the back of the net until Chatham's Zack Conner and Caden Smith assisted Evan Mitchell to bring the Cougars within one with just over three minutes left in the third. 

The Cougars netted their third goal of the period with just ten seconds left in the period when Matthew Doyle found the back of the net to make it a 3-3 game and sent the game into overtime for the second night in a row. 

Chatham fired the game winner just a minute and 23 seconds into the overtime period when Warhoftig assisted Conner who found the back of the net to give Chatham the 4-3 victory, completing the three goal comeback. 

Cain tallied 35 saves in net for the Golden Wolves. 

Alvernia was led by Senio with two goals, Finan added the third goal and tallied two assists. Davies and Dahl both recorded assists for the Golden Wolves, Brendan McBride led with six shots on goal and vande Meerakker fired five. 

The Golden Wolves are back in action next Friday when they host Arcadia at 7:00 PM.
