Fast Start Powers Arcadia Past Alvernia, 5-4

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 20, 2023) - Arcadia University (4-10-2, 4-7-2) used three goals in three minutes to jump out to a 4-1 lead over Alvernia University (5-10-2, 4-8-1) and hold onto a 5-4 win over the Golden Wolves on Friday night in UCHC men's ice hockey action at Alvernia's Body Zone.

Alvernia jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Will White and Hunter Alden connected with Jason Finan just 20 seconds into the action as Finan scored the opening goal of the game.

Alvernia's lead lasted just 2:30 as the Knights evened it up at 1-1 on a goal from Cody Mastay.

With just over three minutes to play in the first period, Alvernia was assessed a five minute major, and the Knights took advantage. 30 seconds into the power play, the Knights took a 2-1 lead. The penalty was not released, and the Knight added their third of the period as the power play continued on. The period ended with the Knights up 3-1 and 1:57 left on the major.  The Knights out-shot the Golden Wolves 13-5 on goal in the opening frame.

Arcadia continued to roll through its power play opportunity as they added their third goal in as many minutes to go up 4-1 on Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves cut their deficit in half ten minutes later as a goal Isaac Chapman off the assist of Peter Falivena and Logan vande Meerakker. But, the two goal differential did not last long as Arcadia retook a three goal lead just ten seconds later Mastay netted his second off the faceoff.

Three minutes later, Alvernia got back within two, 5-3,  as Falivena netted one of his own on a putback goal on a save off the shot of vande Meerakker.

Alvernia came out of the second intermission firing. The Golden Wolves sent eight shots in over the first 4:45, and Alvernia's ninth shot broke through. Sawyer Senio snuck one by off the pass of Alden and Finan to get Alvernia within one, 5-4, with 15:15 to play.

The Golden Wolves pressured the rest of the period, but were unable to break through as Arcadia hung on for the 5-4 win. Alvernia out shot the Knights 65-49, and on net, 39-31.
