Arcadia Holds Off Alvernia, 4-3

Glenside, Pa. (Jan. 21, 2023) - Arcadia University (5-10-2, 5-7-2) edged Alvernia University (5-11-2, 4-9-1) in a 4-3 decision as the Knights completed the weekend sweep of Alvernia in UCHC men's ice hockey action at Arcadia.

The Golden Wolves struck first with an Isaac Chapman goal off the assist of Peter Falivena and Logan vande Meerakker.

About five minutes later, the Knights evened it up on a short-handed goal to make it a 1-1 game with just over 11 minutes to play in the opening period.

With less than two minutes to play in the opening frame, the Knights took a 2-1 lead on a power play goal as the Alvernia penalty was winding down.

The Golden Wolves had one look at net going into intermission, but the shot was blocked as the Knights took the 2-1 lead into the break.

The Golden Wolves had an early power play opportunity to open the second period, and Alvernia peppered the Knights with fives shot during the power play. But, the Knights were able to keep the Golden Wolves from evening it up as the power play was killed without a goal.

Later in the period, Arcadia extended its lead to two on an even strength goal. The Knights then made it a three goal game on a power play goal with just over three minutes to play in the period.

The Golden Wolves got one back in the final minute of the second period as Will White found vande Meerakker to make it a 4-2 game going into the final frame.

The Golden Wolves killed off three power play opportunities for the Knights to stay within one goal throughout the third period. Alvernia scored an empty-net, power play goal with Brendan McBride netting the goal for the Golden Wolves. But, it would be too little too late as the Knights swept the series with the 4-3 win on Saturday.

Vande Meerakker led Alvernia with two assists and a goal. Ian Graiff made 34 saves in net for Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Friday at King's.
