Lions Take Down Golden Wolves, 2-1

Reading, Pa (October 14, 2023) - Alvernia University (5-8, 1-2) scored a late goal but it was not enough as Albright College (6-7, 2-1) pulled out a 2-1 victory in a MAC Commonwealth field hockey matchup Saturday night at Alvernia.

The Lions got on the board late in the first quarter when Keliah Santiago fired a cross across the goal to the stick of Chelsea Johnson who directed into the back of the goal to give Albright a 1-0 lead.

Albright made it two just three minutes later when Santiago connected with Johnson for a second time to make it 2-0 Lions heading into the second quarter.

The Golden Wolves recorded two corners in the second quarter and Rori Caulfield fired a shot that was saved by Albright goalie Veronica Heckman to keep the Lions up 2-0 heading into the half.

A scoreless third quarter was highlighted by the Golden Wolves firing the only two shots by either team with Caroline Martin sending a shot wide and Olivia Catalano hit the post as the Lions held a 2-0 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.

The Golden Wolves offense started to heat up at the start of the fourth quarter with Alvernia tallying three corners and three shots in the first two minutes of the quarter. Gianna DeGregory, Brianna Burkholder and Kathryn Palmer all fired shots on goal but Heckman saved all three to preserve the lead.

Alvernia pulled one back in the 48 minute of the game when Madison Speece fired a shot past Albright's Heckman to cut the Lion's lead to one, 2-1 with just over ten minutes remaining.

The Lions defense held strong in the final ten minutes of the game to secure the 2-1 victory.

Lexi Boettcher tallied two saves in net for the Golden Wolves.

Speece led the Golden Wolves with a goal, Palmer recorded two shots, both of which were on target and Caulfield and DeGregory both fired shots on goal for Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Hood to take on the Blazers at 7:00 PM.
