Alvernia Drops Tight Contest to Susquehanna, 1-0

Reading, Pa (October 3, 2023) - Alvernia University (4-6) fell to Susquehanna University (8-3) 1-0, in a tightly played non-conference field hockey matchup Tuesday evening at Alvernia.

The River Hawks tallied the only goal of the game in the eighth minute of the game and held off the Golden Wolves for the final three quarters to secure the 1-0 victory.

Susquehanna got on the board eight minutes into the first quarter when Ashley Schreffler connected with Rebecca Ripans who fired her shot into the back of the goal to give the River Hawks an early 1-0 lead.

The Golden Wolves started to apply the pressure in the 26th minute of the first half after Rori Caulfield had a shot saved and then won a corner. Off of the corner, Olivia Catalano fired a shot that was saved, then  Ava Michael and Kathryn Palmer both had shots saved by Susquehanna's Ashley Derrick to preserve the 1-0 advantage.

Alvernia tallied one more chance to find the back of the net before the half when Caroline Martin fired a shot, but Kari Schmidt made a save on the goal line to keep the Golden Wolves out of the net as the River Hawks took a 1-0 lead into the half.

Alvernia continued to apply pressure on the River Hawks net, firing three shots in the third quarter, but Susquehanna's Derrick tallied two saves and the third shot was blocked in the circle as the Golden Wolves continued to search for an equalizer.

The River Hawks controlled the offense in the fourth quarter as they out-shot Alvernia 8-0 with six going on goal, but Alvernia goalie Lexi Boettcher saved all six shots on goal to keep the game at 1-0.

Boettcher tallied nine saves in net for the Golden Wolves.

Martin led the Golden Wolves with two shots on goal, Palmer and Michael tallied two total shots and both had one on target. Caulfield and Brianna Burkholder both tallied shots on goal as well and Catalano added a shot on target.

Alvernia is back in action on Saturday when they travel to York to take on the Spartans at 1:00 PM.
