Gabe Wunderlich tallied a first half goal and
Ryan Cogill netted a brace in the second half to lead Alvernia University (6-5, 2-0) to a 2-0, shutout victory over Eastern University (3-5-3, 0-2) in a MAC Commonwealth men's soccer matchup Saturday afternoon at Eastern.
The Golden Wolves fired seven shots in the first 30 minutes of the contest with four going on target. Justin Fetrow fired two on goal, Nick Willson and Ryan Cogill added one each but Eastern's Ty Bleiler saved all four to keep the game tied at zero.
Alvernia got on the board in the 34th minute after Christian Topovich connected with Wunderlich who buried his shot into the back of the net to give the Golden Wolves a 1-0 lead with ten minutes left in the half.
The Eagles sent a shot toward the Alvernia goal in the final ten minutes of the half but it was off target as the Golden Wolves held a one goal lead heading into the half.
Alvernia came out firing in the second half, sending five shots toward the Eagles goal before Cogill netted a penalty kick opportunity to make it 2-0 Alvernia in the 70th minute.
The Golden Wolves threatened a third in the final 20 minutes of play and sent four shots at the Eastern goal but could not tally a third as the Golden Wolves secured the 2-0 victory.
Evan Solley recorded five saves in net for the Golden Wolves and earned a shutout victory.
Cogill and Wunderlich led the Golden Wolves with a goal apiece, Topovich added an assist and also had a shot on goal. Connor Kraycik ripped three shots and Zeke Zambrano also tallied two shots with one being on target.
Alvernia is back in action on Tuesday when they host Lebanon Valley at 7:00 PM.
