Logan vande Meerakker netted two goals to power the Golden Wolves to a 4-1 victory over Nazareth University (1-4-2, 1-2-2) in a UCHC men's ice hockey matchup Friday night at Nazareth.
The Golden Wolves struck first in the eight minute of the first period when Logan vande Meerakker fired a wicked wrister past the Nazareth goalie and into the back of the net on a power play to put Alvernia up 1-0 early in the game. Matthew Davies recorded the assist on the goal, marking the sixth game this season that Davies has recorded a point.
Both the Golden Wolves and Golden Flyers fired shots at each other's goals in the next seven minutes before Nazareth found an equalizer when Nate Mann and Liam Beaudoin assisted Blake Frost with just over four minutes to go in the first period and take the game into the first intermission tied at one.
Alvernia fired 23 shots at the Nazareth goal in the first 15 minutes before Max Cole gave the Golden Wolves the lead again with 4:04 left in the second period. Isaac Chapman centered the puck to Cole on the right side of the goal and Cole slotted the puck into the back of the net to make it a 2-1 game.
Alvernia goalie Jackson Fellner tallied seven saves in the final four minutes of the second period to deny the Golden Flyers an equalizer and send the Golden Wolves into the final intermission with a 2-1 advantage.
Fellner continued to be a brick wall to start the third period as he tallied eight saves in the first nine minutes of the final period to preserve the one goal lead for the Golden Wolves.
Alvernia extended its lead to two when vande Meerakker lit the lamp for the second time in the 12th minute of the third period to make it a 3-1 Golden Wolves lead.
The Golden Wolves netted one more insurance goal in the 17th minute of the third period when Kyle Patton assisted Vincent Servizzi to make it 4-1 Alvernia. Servizzi tracked down the puck in the Nazareth defensive zone and fired a narrow angled shot into the open Nazareth net to secure the 4-1 victory for the Golden Wolves.
Fellner recorded 31 saves in goal for Alvernia and earned his second win of the season.
Vande Meerakker led the Golden Wolves with two goals, Cole and Servizzi added the others. Davies, Patton and Chapman all added assists for Alvernia and Jordan Gagnon led the way with two blocks. Robert Pizzey tallied ten faceoff wins and Patton recorded nine.
The Golden Wolves are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they take on the Golden Flyers for game two of the series at 3:00 PM.
