Fellner Leads Alvernia Past Nazareth, 2-1

Rochester N.Y. (November 18, 2023) - Alvernia University (6-1-1, 5-1) took down Nazareth University (1-5-2, 1-3-2) 2-1, in a UCHC men's ice hockey matchup Saturday afternoon at Nazareth. 

The 2-1 victory for the Golden Wolves secured the series sweep over the Golden Flyers. Alvernia goalie Jackson Fellner tallied 47 saves on 48 shots to help lead the Golden Wolves to a win. Fellner tallied a total of 78 saves across both games against the Golden Flyers. 

The Golden Flyers got on the board first in the seventh minute of the first period when Logan Tobias scored an unassisted goal to put Nazareth up 1-0 with just over 13 minutes to go in the first period. 

Alvernia responded just 1:48 seconds later when Andrew Deschenes and Logan vande Meerakker connected with Isaac Chapman who fired the puck into the back of the net to tie the game at one with 11 minutes to go in the period. 

The Golden Wolves would send seven shots at the Nazareth net in the final 10 minutes of the first period but could not find the back of the net as the game headed into the first intermission locked at one. 

Nazareth fired 20 shots in the first 14 minutes of the second period with 17 of them going on target but Alvernia goalie Jackson Fellner saved all 17 to keep the game tied at one. 

The Golden Wolves found the winner with five minutes left in the second period when Robert Pizzey lit the lamp after assists from Max Cole and Sean Kenny to give Alvernia a 2-1 lead. Pizzey deflected a puck that was in the air back onto the ice and into the back of the Nazareth goal to give Alvernia the lead. 

Alvernia sent six more shots at the Golden Flyers net in the final five minutes but could not tally another as they held a 2-1 lead going into the final intermission. 

Nazareth started the final period on a power play for seven minutes after penalties by the Golden Wolves and fired nine shots at the Alvernia net but Fellner and the Alvernia defense continued to deny the Golden Flyers and maintain the 2-1 lead. 

The Golden Flyers continued to apply the pressure in the final six minutes of the game, sending 14 shots at Fellner but he continued to be a wall in net and tallied seven saves to deny Nazareth and secure the 2-1 victory for the Golden Wolves. 

Feller ended his afternoon with 47 saves and earned the win in goal for Alvernia. 

Chapman and Pizzey led for Alvernia with the goals, Cole, Kenny and vande Meerakker all tallied assists. Christian Dahl led the Golden Wolves with three blocked shots and both Dean Noonan and Matthew Davies each recorded two. 

Alvernia is back in action on Friday December 1st when they host Manhattanville in an UCHC matchup at BodyZone at 7:00 PM.
