Golden Wolves Fall to Valiants, 2-1

Reading, Pa (December 1, 2023) - Two first period goals powered Manhattanville College (3-7-0, 3-4-0) to a 2-1 victory over Alvernia University (6-2-1, 5-2-0) in a UCHC men's ice hockey matchup Friday night at BodyZone.

Manhattanville struck first in the 11th minute of the first period when Artem Mateichenko assisted Lane Pattison who found the back of the net to give the Valiants a 1-0 lead.

The Valiants made it 2-0 in the final 38 seconds of the first period when Pattison and Mateichenko assisted AJ Bella who fired a rocket into the top right corner of the goal to give Manhattanville a two goal advantage going into the first intermission.

The Golden Wolves grabbed one back in the sixth minute of the second period when Sean Kenny found Jordan Gagnon who ripped a shot from the blue line past the Valiants goalie and into the back of the net to make it a 2-1 game in favor of Manhattanville.

Alvernia fired 12 shots at the Manhattanville goal in the final 15 minutes of the period but could not put the puck in the back of the net as the Valiants held a 2-1 advantage heading into the final intermission.

The Golden Wolves fired 21 shots in the third period with nine going on goal but Manhattanville's Sebastian Woods tallied nine saves to deny Alvernia an equalizer and secure the 2-1 victory in game one of the series.

Jackson Fellner tallied 31 saves in net for the Golden Wolves.

Gagnon scored the only goal for Alvernia and Kenny tallied the assist. Logan vande Meerakker led with five shots on goal, Gagnon, Matthew Davies, Fraser Dodd, and Isaac Chapman all fired four shots on goal and Hunter Alden tallied a team high 11 faceoff wins.

The Golden Wolves are back in action tomorrow when they host the Valiants for game two of the series at 4:00 PM at BodyZone.
