Valiants Down Golden Wolves, 4-3

Reading, Pa (December 2, 2023) - Alvernia University (6-3-1, 5-3-0) fell to Manhattanville College (4-7-0, 4-4-0), 4-3 in a UCHC men's ice hockey matchup Saturday afternoon at BodyZone.

The Valiants tallied two goals in the first and third periods to fend off a late push from the Golden Wolves to secure the 4-3 victory and secure the series sweep.

Manhattanville struck first just 1:30 into the first period when Johno Hoins netted the opener thanks to an assist from Justin Fernet to make it 1-0.

The Golden Wolves fired 12 shots at the Valiants goal in the next eight minutes with ten going on target but Manhattanville's Sebastian Woods saved all ten to deny Alvernia an equalizer.

The Valiants netted their second goal in the 11th minute of the first period when Lane Pattison assisted AJ Bella to put Manhattanville up 2-0 with just over nine minutes to play in the first period.

Alvernia tallied ten shots in the final nine minutes of the period but were unable to find the back of the net as the Valiants took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

The Golden Wolves netted the only goal of the second period to pull within one of the Valiants when Isaac Chapman lit the lamp thanks to assists from Logan vande Meerakker and Matthew Davies to make it a 2-1 game after two periods of hockey.

Manhattanville extended its lead to two just under nine minutes into the final period when Bella and Artem Mateichenko assisted Pattison to put the Valiants up 3-1 with just over 11 minutes left in the third period.

Alvernia grabbed one back just under four minutes later when Davies fired his shot past Woods and into the back of the net to make it a 3-2 game. Vande Meerakker tallied the assist for the Golden Wolves, his second of the evening.

Manhattanville responded almost immediately when Hoins tallied his second just 22 seconds later thanks to assists from Raymond Speerbrecker and Nicholas Rogers to make it a 4-2 game with under eight to play.

Chapman scored his second goal of the game with just over three minutes left in the third period when he netted an unassisted goal to cut the Manhattanville lead to one, 4-3 with three to play.

The Golden Wolves tallied five shots in the final three minutes but were unable to find an equalizer as the Valiants secured the 4-3 victory and recorded the series sweep.

Jackson Fellner tallied 33 saves in goal for Alvernia.

Chapman led the Golden Wolves with two goals and Davies added the third. Vande Meerakker led the way with two assists, and Davies tallied the third. Peter Falivena led Alvernia with 11 faceoff wins and Hunter Alden recorded nine.
