Golden Wolves Down Devils, 3-2, in OT Thriller

Reading, Pa (November 18, 2023) - Ryan Cogill netted the game winner in the seventh minute of the first overtime period to lead Alvernia University (12-7-1) to a 3-2 overtime victory over FDU-Florham (9-3-7) in a ECAC men's soccer semifinal Saturday afternoon at Alvernia. 

Cogill scored Alvernia's first and third goals to lead the Golden Wolves to the ECAC Championship game against Penn State Behrend tomorrow at 12:00 PM. 

The Golden Wolves struck first in the 21st minute of the game when Nick Willson played a long ball to the feet of Ryan Cogill who fended off a FDU defender and flicked the ball into the back of the net to give Alvernia a 1-0 lead. 

Alvernia made it two just four minutes later when Cogill assisted Connor Kraycik who fired his shot past the Devils' keeper to make it a 2-0 game. The goal marked the fifth goal in two games for Kraycik. 

The Golden Wolves dropped down to ten men in the 26th minute of the game when he was shown a red card for a challenge, the Golden Wolves would play the next 84 minutes with ten men. 

The Devils made the Golden Wolves pay quickly when Drilon Toska assisted Scott Tolochko just two minutes after the red card to cut the lead in half, 2-1. 

FDU-Florham found an equalizer in the final 15 seconds of the first half when the Devils were awarded a free kick just outside the box. FDU's Yariel Parapi stepped up to take the free kick and buried it into the top left corner of the goal to tie the game at two heading into the half. 

A scoreless second half was highlighted by Alvernia sending 12 shots at the FDU goal compared to FDU's eight. Willson, Cogill, Kraycik, and Gabe Wunderlich all fired shots on goal that were saved in the second half as the game heading to overtime locked at two.

Wunderlich fired a shot that hit the post in the first overtime period and Cogill fired one that was saved before Cogill found the back of the net in the 97th minute of the game. Wunderlich whipped a corner kick into the box and found the head of Cogill who directed his header into the top left side of the goal to give Alvernia the 3-2 advantage heading into the second overtime period. 

The Devils sent five shots at the Alvernia net in the second overtime period but Alvernia keeper Evan Solley and the Alvernia defense held strong to secure the 3-2 victory and advance to the ECAC Championship. 

Solley gets the win in net for the Golden Wolves and tallied six saves. 

Cogill led Alvernia with two goals and an assist, Kraycik added a goal and Wunderlich tallied an assist on the game winner. Cogill fired 6 shots on goal, Kraycik added two and Eli Klinger, Zeke Zambrano and Evan Bauer all tallied shots on goal for the Golden Wolves. 

Alvernia is back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Penn State Behrend in the ECAC Championship game at 12:00 PM. PSU Behrend advanced to the championship game with a 1-0 victory over Goucher in the other semifinal matchup.
