Alvernia Downs Albright, 28-16

Payne Accounts for All Four of Alvernia's Touchdowns

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 4, 2023) - Alvernia University (1-8, 1-7) scored 14 unanswered to come away with a big 28-16 win over Albright College (0-9, 0-8) on Saturday afternoon in MAC football action at Alvernia.

The win marked Alvernia's second straight win over the crosstown rival Lions.

The Lions took a 10-7 lead late in the first half and led 16-14 with just over a minute to play in the third quarter. Alvernia then scored 14 unanswered off of  39-yard and 71-yard passing touchdowns by Colin Payne.

Alvernia won the toss and differed. Both teams traded drives before Alvernia's Khyzir Young came up with an interception along Alvernia's sideline to set the Golden Wolves up on their own 20 yard line.

After a sack and an incompletion early in the drive, Alvernia found its rhythm on third and long as Payne connected with Dachan Thompson for a 23-yard pickup. Alvernia kept things moving with a 12-yard reception by Joseph Perkins for another fresh set of downs. A pass interference call against the Lions moved Alvernia into Albright territory, and a 27-yard reception to Thompson to the Albright 4-yard line moved Alvernia deep into the red zone. After Shymarr Wright picked up two yards on the ground, Payne called his own number and fell forward into the end zone to get Alvernia on the board. Following a successful PAT by Joe Fragale, Alvernia took the 7-0 lead with 3:05 to play in the first quarter.

Albright responded on its ensuing drive, hitting a 52 yard rush up the middle to even the game up at 7-7 with just under a minute to play in the first quarter.

Albright then took the lead in the second quarter after putting together a 10 minute, 53-yard drive that resulted in a field goal for a 10-7 lead. The score would remain 10-7 going into the half.

Alvernia received the opening kickoff of the second half, and needed just two plays to retake the lead. Following a 10-yard pass to Perkins, Payne hit Zach Ayers in stride at midfield and Ayers headed straight for the end zone untouched to give Alvernia the 14-10 lead following the made PAT.

After a trading of drives, the Lions put together another lengthy one. But, this time they found the end zone to take the lead, 16-14. Albright went for two, but could not convert.

After both teams again traded punts, Alvernia got the fourth quarter started deep in its own territory. A quick 4-yard pickup from Ozmere Jones moved Alvernia to its own 15 yard line, and a 23-yard pass to Thompson moved Alvernia to the 38. Payne kept things rolling for the Golden Wolves, hitting Perkins for another eight yards and another completion to Thompson for 15 more. Payne then went right back to Thompson and found him on the Alvernia sideline where he caught it and then ran for 39 yards up the field and into the end zone to give Alvernia the 21-16 lead.

Alvernia made stops on the next two Albright drives before another big play gave Alvernia the two score advantage. On the second play of a drive that began on the Alvernia 29-yard line, Payne found Perkins in stride along the Alvernia sideline and Perkins took it 71 yards to the end zone to give Alvernia the 28-16 lead.

Alvernia's defense then made two more stops before the offense hit the V-formation and ran out the clock for the 28-16 win.

Payne finished with 14 completions for 341 yards - averaging of 24 yards a completion - with three passing touchdowns and one rushing. Thompson finished with six receptions for 139 yards and Perkins finished with five receptions for 112 yards. Thompson, Perkins, and Ayers each finished with touchdown receptions.

Defensively, Carr led Alvernia with 12 tackles to set a new single-season tackle record for Alvernia as he surpassed the record of 84 held by Jamel Fleming. Carr is just six tackles off the century mark with one game to go. McCabe Piavis and Antonio Lazar each finished with nine tackles.

Alvernia closes out the 2023 season on the road on Saturday at King's.
