Grantham, Pa. (Dec. 2, 2023) - Alvernia's Matthew Lackman took first place and was named outstanding wrestler of the tournament as the Golden Wolves took third place in the field of 13 schools at Messiah's Petrofes Invitational.

Lackman took first place at 165 lbs and his win by major decision in the championship bout marked his 100th career win. He is the first wrestler in program history to reach the milestone.

Messiah took first place with a team score of 176.5 points. Springfield took second with 146 points, and Alvernia took third with 143 points.

Alvernia had seven wrestlers take top five finishes. 

Anthony Portillo took 4th place at 133 lbs and finished with two wins by decisions and a technical fall. 

Avery Leonard took second place at 141 lbs and finished the weekend with a pin, two win by technical falls and a win by major decision. He was edged in the first place match by an 8-4 decision from Greensboro's Josh Wilson.

Jason Rezac took second place at 157 lbs. He finished the weekend with two pins and was narrowly edged, 3-2, in the first place match by Mount Union's Nick Nettleton.

Chance Babb took fifth place at 165 lbs and finished the tournament with four wins by technical fall, including a 22-5 win in the fifth place match over Mount Union's Blake Kaminski.

Lackman started out the tournament with a technical fall and two falls on Friday. He then recorded an 18-1 technical fall in the semifinals, and defeated Messiah's Zach Needles with a 15-2 major decision in the championship match to pick up the first place finish and his 100th win.

Gavin Hollingsworth took third place at 174 lbs. He finished the weekend with all five of his wins coming by technical fall, including a 23-4 win over Muhlenberg's Aiden Weingrad in the 3rd place match.

Brian Czaus picked up a fifth place finish at 285 lbs for Alvernia. He finished the weekend with a win by fall and three wins by decision. He took fifth place via a forfeit by Muhlenberg's Ben Krauss.
